The unwanted prophet is identified and summoned The king of Israel tells Jehoshaphat there is still “one man” through whom they can inquire of Yahweh: Micaiah son of Imlah. He immediately adds his personal evaluation—he hates Micaiah—because Micaiah does not speak “good” about him but “evil.” Jehoshaphat objects to the way the king is talking. In response, the king calls an officer and orders Micaiah to be brought quickly.

This unit sits inside a larger scene where Israel’s king and Judah’s king discuss a military campaign and seek a word from Yahweh before acting. Just prior to this, Jehoshaphat asks that they inquire of Yahweh, and a large group of prophets give a single, confident message of victory. These verses introduce a contrast by naming one more prophet who is not part of that consensus and by explaining why he is being avoided. The scene also builds tension through public staging (thrones, robes, city gate) and through the attempt to manage the prophet’s speech before he even arrives.
Historical Context
The setting assumes two neighboring Hebrew kingdoms after the split: Israel in the north and Judah in the south, sometimes allied by diplomacy and shared interests. The action takes place at Samaria, the northern capital, in a public place at the city gate where officials could gather, hear petitions, and conduct business. The immediate political issue is conflict with Syria/Aram over territory east of the Jordan, with Ramoth-gilead as the target. How to read “good” and “evil.” Some read the king’s “good/evil” language mainly as predictions of outcomes (victory vs. disaster). Others hear a moral judgment claim as well (Micaiah “speaks evil” in the sense of hostile, unpatriotic, or wrongheaded speech). The passage itself ties it to the king’s personal experience (“concerning me”), leaving room for both shades, but it clearly shows the king evaluates prophecy by whether it benefits him.
How coercive the messenger is. Some see the messenger’s request as practical advice in a dangerous court setting (“please… be like them”). Others see it as pressure with implied threat, since it appeals to unanimity and royal favor. Either way, the text highlights an attempt to pre-shape prophecy before it is delivered.
What “all the prophets” means. Some take it as every prophetic voice present in the royal setting; others take it as “the full group assembled for this consultation,” without implying every prophet in the nation. The narrative’s contrast with the “one man” Micaiah favors the second reading: it is a full court chorus, not literally every prophet anywhere.
The Hebrew “good/evil” terms can describe outcomes or moral qualities, and the story is told through court speech, where words can be both theological and political. Also, the passage gives limited internal access to motives: it reports speech and staging, but leaves readers to infer whether the messenger or Zedekiah is sincerely mistaken, performing propaganda, or mixing both.
It shows that “inquiring of Yahweh” can be surrounded by social incentives that reward agreement and punish dissent (explicit: vv.10–13). It also introduces a key test of prophetic integrity inside the story world: refusing to tailor a message to the king or the crowd, and insisting on speaking only what Yahweh gives (explicit: v.14). The public setting at the city gate frames the decision as political and communal, not merely private spirituality (explicit: v.10).
