Question 1

What three building projects are specifically said to be unfinished in 1 Kings 3:1, and why might the narrator list them together?

Accepted Answer

Verse 1 names Solomon’s own house (his palace), “the house of Yahweh” (the temple), and “the wall of Jerusalem.” The narrator groups them to show the kingdom is in a transition stage: Solomon is already acting like an established monarch (housing a foreign royal bride in Jerusalem), yet the core structures of his reign are still incomplete—royal residence, central worship center, and city defenses. The list also ties political life (palace and fortifications) and worship life (temple) together, signaling that both realms are being shaped at the same time early in his rule.

Question 2

According to 1 Kings 3:2, what reason is given for sacrificing at the high places, and what does that imply about this period?

Accepted Answer

Verse 2 explains that the people sacrifice at the high places “because there was no house built for the name of Yahweh until those days.” The stated reason is the absence of a dedicated temple, not an explicit rejection of Yahweh. This implies a period when worship was happening at multiple local sites while waiting for a central sanctuary. It also suggests the narrative is aware of a developing ideal: worship focused on a specific place connected with Yahweh’s name. The verse frames decentralized worship as connected to timing and infrastructure, not merely personal preference.

Question 3

How does 1 Kings 3:3 describe Solomon’s relationship to Yahweh, and what qualification immediately follows?

Accepted Answer

Verse 3 makes two positive claims: Solomon “loved Yahweh” and he was “walking in the statutes of David his father,” linking his loyalty to the Davidic model. Immediately, the verse adds a limitation: “only he sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places.” The structure creates a mixed portrait. The text does not deny Solomon’s devotion, but it refuses to present his worship practices as fully aligned with the developing standard implied in verse 2 (a temple for Yahweh’s name). The qualification also connects Solomon’s behavior with what “the people” are doing.

Question 4

What do the repeated uses of “only” in verses 2 and 3 accomplish in the flow of the paragraph?

Accepted Answer

The word “only” appears in both verse 2 (“Only the people sacrificed…”) and verse 3 (“only he sacrificed…”). In context, it functions like a verbal highlighter: the narrator is narrowing the reader’s attention to a specific feature that qualifies an otherwise straightforward description. This repetition creates tension: there is real devotion to Yahweh and real public worship activity, yet something about where and how worship is happening is treated as an exception. The device prepares the reader to watch Solomon’s worship choices closely in the following scene at Gibeon.

Question 5

Why does 1 Kings 3:4 single out Gibeon, and what is emphasized about Solomon’s sacrifice there?

Accepted Answer

Verse 4 says Solomon went to Gibeon “for that was the great high place,” giving it special status among the various sites. The text does not explain whether “great” means size, importance, or established tradition, but it clearly marks Gibeon as the primary location for this major royal act of worship. The verse also emphasizes scale: Solomon offers “a thousand burnt offerings” on that altar. The number underscores extraordinary royal expenditure and seriousness. In the narrative flow, it signals that something significant is about to happen at this location.

Question 6

How do verses 1–4 connect political leadership and worship practices in Solomon’s early reign?

Accepted Answer

The passage places Solomon’s diplomatic action (marrying Pharaoh’s daughter) and his building agenda (palace, temple, wall) alongside the state of Israel’s worship (high places due to no temple). This framing shows that Solomon’s reign is not described only in political terms or only in religious terms; both are intertwined. His political strength allows major projects and alliances, while the unfinished temple shapes how worship is carried out across the land. The narrator also links Solomon personally to both spheres: he is the king managing alliances and construction, and he is the worshiper offering sacrifices at Gibeon.

Question 7

What does the phrase “a house built for the name of Yahweh” (v.2) suggest about what the temple is meant to represent?

Accepted Answer

The phrase “for the name of Yahweh” suggests that the temple is not simply a large religious building, but a designated place associated with Yahweh’s recognized presence and public honor. It implies focus and identification: the “name” stands for Yahweh’s known identity and reputation among his people. In the logic of verse 2, the lack of such a house helps explain why worship is happening at multiple sites. Without a central place tied to Yahweh’s name, worship remains scattered. The wording also prepares for why building the temple will be a major theological and national milestone.
