Since the text gives an explicit reason for high-place worship (no temple yet) but also treats it as a qualification, readers differ on whether the qualification is mild (“not ideal, but understandable for now”) or sharp (“still a problem, even if common”). Also, the marriage to Pharaoh’s daughter is stated without an immediate moral comment, so interpreters decide whether to treat later developments as controlling how this earlier act should be evaluated.
