Question 1

What three movements does the verse describe (what happened, how people responded, and why)?

Accepted Answer

The verse moves in a simple sequence. First, the decision becomes public knowledge: “all Israel heard” about the judgment the king rendered. Second, it reports the emotional-social reaction: they “feared” the king, meaning their posture toward him changed in a serious way. Third, it gives the narrator’s reason for that reaction: people recognized “the wisdom of God” as present in him, and they connected that wisdom with his capacity “to do justice.” The structure links information (news), response (fear/awe), and interpretation (wisdom-for-justice).

Question 2

In this verse, what does “all Israel heard” most clearly claim, and what does it not necessarily claim?

Accepted Answer

Most clearly, it claims the verdict became widely known beyond the two women and the immediate court setting. The ruling travels as a report, becoming part of national awareness and conversation. It does not necessarily claim every person heard it directly, at the same time, or from Solomon himself. The phrase can function as a broad way of saying the whole nation, as a public, came to know about it. The verse’s main point is the reach and impact of the judgment, not the mechanics of communication.

Question 3

What range of meaning fits “they feared the king,” and what in the verse supports that range?

Accepted Answer

The fear can reasonably range from respectful awe to a more anxious dread. The verse supports awe/respect because it explains fear as a response to perceived wisdom and justice: people react not to cruelty but to the king’s demonstrated ability to judge rightly. At the same time, fear can include the sense that this ruler is not easily deceived and has real authority—his decisions carry weight and consequences. The explanation (“for they saw…wisdom…to do justice”) keeps the fear tied to his judicial credibility.

Question 4

What does the verse mean by saying they “saw” wisdom, and how can “seeing” happen when the nation only “heard” the case?

Accepted Answer

The verse first says the nation “heard” about the judgment, then says they “saw” that wisdom was in him. That pairing suggests “saw” can mean recognizing or perceiving through the reported outcome, not necessarily witnessing in person. People can “see” wisdom in the sense of grasping what kind of skill must have been at work, based on how the case was resolved. The text’s logic is: hearing the story leads to a clear conclusion about Solomon’s discernment and its effect in producing justice.

Question 5

What is explicitly attributed to God in the verse, and what is the practical goal of that God-related wisdom?

Accepted Answer

Explicitly, the verse says the “wisdom of God was in him.” It presents Solomon’s wisdom as God-related, not merely a human talent detached from God. The practical goal named is “to do justice.” That means the wisdom is not described as abstract brilliance but as competence for making right decisions and carrying them out as king. The public’s reaction is grounded in this connection: because they associate his judging ability with God-given or God-connected wisdom, they treat his authority with heightened seriousness.

Question 6

How does the verse connect public opinion with royal authority, and what evidence does it give for that connection?

Accepted Answer

The verse links Solomon’s authority to the nation’s perception of his judicial performance. The evidence is the reported chain: once the people hear the verdict, they “fear” the king, and that fear is explained by their recognition of wisdom that results in justice. In other words, the king’s standing rises because people believe his decisions are wise and socially ordering. The text does not describe military victories or wealth here; it highlights trust and seriousness generated by credible judgment. Authority is strengthened through perceived justice.
