Where interpretation differs

1) Are the many “Ben-…” names personal names or titles? The list begins with several officials named “Ben-hur,” “Ben-deker,” “Ben-hesed,” “Ben-geber.” Some readers take these as real names in their own right, while others think they function more like “son of X,” shortened in a way that highlights lineage rather than the official’s personal name.

2) How do these districts relate to Israel’s older tribal map? Some think Solomon intentionally ignored or reshaped tribal boundaries to create a more centralized, practical tax-and-supply structure. Others think the list still broadly tracks the tribal regions, even if described by towns and sub-regions.

3) What does “he was the only officer who was in the land” mean (v. 19)? Some understand it as saying Geber son of Uri was the only district officer for that whole Transjordan area described in v. 19. Others think it means he was the only one officer for that land while other lands had multiple subdivisions, or that the wording flags an overlap with earlier Transjordan assignments (especially v. 13).

Why the disagreement exists

The roster style gives minimal explanation: it lists names and places without clarifying whether “Ben-” is functioning as a naming pattern or a shortened genealogy, and it does not explicitly describe how the districts were drawn. Also, v. 19 is brief and slightly ambiguous in English, and the Transjordan material appears in more than one entry (vv. 13–14, 19), inviting questions about overlap.
