Question 1

Why does 1 Kings 6:1 give both “Solomon’s fourth year” and “480 years after the exodus” to date the project?

Accepted Answer

The verse uses two reference points to locate the temple’s beginning within both royal history and Israel’s shared story. “Solomon’s fourth year” places the work early in his reign and within the book’s king-by-king framework. “480 years after the exodus” ties the temple to the central memory of deliverance from Egypt, suggesting that the temple is being presented as a culmination or major milestone in Israel’s national life. The named month (Ziv, second month) adds an administrative, calendar-like precision to the start date.

Question 2

What does the passage explicitly say Solomon began building, and how is it described?

Accepted Answer

The passage says Solomon began to build “the house of Yahweh.” That description matters because it frames the structure primarily as a place associated with Israel’s God, not as a monument to Solomon. The repeated focus on “the house” and its measured features keeps attention on the building’s purpose and identity. Even when the text gives architectural specifics—dimensions, porch, windows, side chambers—the structure is consistently presented as the temple for Yahweh, which sets the stage for later descriptions of the inner sanctuary and worship-related features.

Question 3

What basic dimensions and parts of the temple complex are introduced in verses 2–3?

Accepted Answer

Verses 2–3 describe the main temple building’s size (60 cubits long, 20 wide, 30 high) and then introduce the front porch. The porch is measured in a way that relates it to the building’s width (20 cubits long, matching the front) and gives its outward depth (10 cubits). The effect is to establish a simple, proportional layout: a rectangular main structure with a porch attached at the front. The text does not yet describe interior rooms in detail, but it is already sketching a clear overall footprint.

Question 4

What is said about the windows in verse 4, and what uncertainties remain?

Accepted Answer

Verse 4 says Solomon made windows “of fixed lattice-work.” The explicit claim is that the temple had windows and that they were designed with some kind of fixed framework or screening. What remains uncertain is exactly what they looked like—how large they were, how they were shaped, and whether the lattice was primarily for security, light control, ventilation, or a combination. The verse gives a feature, not a full design. Still, it shows the building was not a sealed stone box; it had planned openings with a defined construction style.

Question 5

How do verses 5–6 describe the side structures, and what do the measurements suggest?

Accepted Answer

Verses 5–6 describe additional “stories” (levels) and side chambers built around the temple walls, including around both the main temple space and the inner sanctuary area. The widths increase by level—five cubits (lowest), six (middle), seven (third). That pattern fits the explanation about “offsets” on the outside of the wall: as the wall steps inward (or provides ledges), higher levels can be wider without cutting beam-holes into the main temple walls. The passage highlights a deliberate structural solution, not just added storage rooms.

Question 6

What is the significance of the construction method described in verse 7?

Accepted Answer

Verse 7 emphasizes that stones were prepared at the quarry so the temple was assembled on-site without the noise of hammers, axes, or iron tools. Explicitly, this tells how the work was organized: shaping and finishing happened away from the temple location, implying planning, skilled labor, and staged logistics. The verse also draws attention to the atmosphere at the building site—quiet during construction—marking the place as different from ordinary building projects. The text does not explain motives, but it clearly wants the reader to notice the unusual method and result.

Question 7

What does the passage’s focus on measurements and method contribute to the larger narrative of Kings?

Accepted Answer

The detailed measurements and building notes slow the story down and present the temple as a concrete, carefully executed project rather than a vague symbol. In Kings, Solomon is often described through administration, wealth, and major undertakings; here that royal capacity is channeled into building “Yahweh’s house.” The narrative style also prepares for later chapters that will describe interior spaces, materials, and dedication. By beginning with date, dimensions, and controlled construction, the author frames the temple as an ordered centerpiece of Solomon’s reign and Israel’s worship life.
