Question 1

What two different sets of doors are described in verses 31–35, and what spaces do they lead into?

Accepted Answer

Verses 31–32 describe doors for the entrance to the “oracle,” meaning the inner sanctuary (the most restricted room). Verses 33–35 then describe doors for the entrance to the “temple,” meaning the main room in front of the inner sanctuary. The passage distinguishes these spaces by giving each its own doorway materials and construction details. That separation suggests controlled access: the narrative does not treat the building as one open hall, but as a series of increasingly restricted areas marked by distinct entrances.

Question 2

Which materials are used for (1) the doorposts/frames, (2) the doors themselves, and (3) the overlay, and how do the two entrances compare?

Accepted Answer

For the oracle entrance, the doors are olivewood and the doorframe elements are also described with olivewood (vv. 31–32). For the temple entrance, the doorposts are olivewood, but the doors are fir-wood (vv. 33–34). Both sets of doors receive gold overlay (vv. 32, 35). The comparison shows both continuity and variation: the decoration and gold are consistent, while the wood differs between the inner sanctuary doors (olivewood) and the main-room doors (fir-wood).

Question 3

What carved images appear on the doors, and what repeated combination of motifs does the passage emphasize?

Accepted Answer

Both sets of doors have the same carved motifs: cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers (vv. 32, 35). The repetition matters because it ties the entrances together visually and thematically: even though the woods and proportions differ, the imagery is consistent across the thresholds. The text does not explain the meaning of each motif here, but it clearly intends the reader to notice the repeated combination and the care taken to carve and then gold-cover those carvings.

Question 4

What does the passage say about how gold is applied, and what is clear (and not clear) about the method?

Accepted Answer

The oracle doors are “overlaid” with gold, and the writer adds that he “spread the gold” on the cherubim and palm trees (v. 32). The temple doors are likewise overlaid, with gold fitted to the engraved work (v. 35). What is clear is that gold covers the carved surfaces and is worked to match the carving. What is not clear is the exact technique (for example, thickness, whether leaf or plating, or how the gold was fixed). The passage focuses on effect and completeness rather than technical process.

Question 5

What construction detail is given for the inner court in verse 36, and what pattern does it describe?

Accepted Answer

Verse 36 says the inner court is built with “three courses of hewn stone, and a course of cedar beams.” That reads like a repeating pattern in the wall: three layers (or rows) of cut stone, then one layer of cedar, producing alternating structural and visual bands. The verse does not specify the court’s exact dimensions or full layout, but it gives enough to show deliberate design and substantial material investment beyond the main building itself.

Question 6

What dates does the text give for the start and completion of the temple, and how does it summarize the overall duration?

Accepted Answer

The foundation is laid in Solomon’s fourth year, in the month Ziv (v. 37). The temple is finished in Solomon’s eleventh year, in the month Bul, identified as the eighth month (v. 38). The writer then concludes, “So was he seven years in building it.” The summary does more than date the work; it frames the temple as a complete project that reached its planned endpoint (“throughout all the parts of it” and “according to all the fashion of it”).

Question 7

How do the “fifth part” (v. 31) and “fourth part” (v. 33) notes function in the passage even if the exact geometry is uncertain?

Accepted Answer

Even without a clear modern diagram, these fraction notes function as signals of precision and planning. The writer is not only saying “doors existed,” but that their frames had set proportions. The difference between “fifth part” for the oracle entrance and “fourth part” for the temple entrance also suggests the two doorways were not identical; each threshold had its own design. The text uses these measurements to reinforce ordered craftsmanship, even if readers debate exactly how the fractions map onto wall or opening dimensions.
