Hiram is brought in and introduced Solomon sends for Hiram from Tyre. The text describes him as the son of a widow connected with Naphtali, with a Tyrian father, and as a bronze worker of unusual ability. His “wisdom, understanding, and skill” are presented as the reason he can carry out the king’s assigned work.
The two bronze pillars and their capitals Hiram makes two bronze pillars of equal height: eighteen cubits each. Each pillar’s circumference is measured as twelve cubits. He also makes two cast bronze capitals to sit on top of the pillars, five cubits high each.
Decorative networks, chains, lilies, and pomegranates The capitals are decorated with network-like designs and chain-like wreaths, with seven sets for each capital. The networks cover the capitals, and the porch-facing capitals feature lily-work of four cubits. Hiram’s tribal identification. This text links Hiram’s mother to Naphtali (v. 14), while a parallel account links her to Dan. Some interpreters think one of the accounts reflects a scribal or memory-level difference in transmission. Others argue the details can be harmonized (for example, by marriage, residence, or mixed family ties across tribal lines), so both can be true in different senses.
How to picture the pillar/capital details. The passage references nets, chain-like decorations, lily-work, a “belly” area, and pomegranate counts (vv. 17–20). Interpreters disagree about the exact shape implied and about whether “two hundred pomegranates” is meant for one capital only (as the wording suggests here) or for both in total, especially when compared with similar descriptions elsewhere.
The disagreements mostly arise because the passage is giving technical, partial description without diagrams, and because closely related passages report some details differently. Terms like “belly” and the shifting focus from one capital to the “other” capital make it hard to track whether the writer is describing one pillar at a time or alternating between them.
Within Kings’ larger story, these verses add concrete detail to Solomon’s temple project: a foreign-trained craftsman is commissioned, two massive bronze pillars are produced with specified dimensions, elaborate ornamentation is added, and the entrance pillars receive names (Jachin and Boaz) as they are set up at the porch (vv. 13–22). The text’s clear emphasis is that Israel’s central worship site was built with intentional artistry, public grandeur, and ordered workmanship, not improvised construction.
