Question 1

In vv. 41–43, what motivates the foreigner’s journey and prayer, and what does Solomon ask God to do in response?

Accepted Answer

The foreigner comes from a distant country “for your name’s sake,” meaning because Yahweh’s reputation has reached beyond Israel (v. 41). The text specifies what the foreigner has heard: Yahweh’s “great name,” “mighty hand,” and “outstretched arm” (v. 42), which are standard ways of describing powerful deliverance. The foreigner then prays “toward this house,” the temple (v. 42). Solomon asks God, who dwells in heaven, to hear and to act on the foreigner’s request (v. 43), with the stated aim that all peoples would come to know Yahweh’s name and relate to him as Israel does.

Question 2

What purpose does Solomon give for God answering the foreigner (v. 43), and how does that purpose shape the meaning of the request?

Accepted Answer

Solomon explicitly ties the answer to a wider goal: “that all the peoples of the earth may know your name, to fear you, as does your people Israel” (v. 43). The purpose is not only the foreigner’s benefit but a public recognition of Yahweh that spreads among the nations. That purpose can be read as shaping the request in two ways: it highlights the temple as a witness to Yahweh’s identity (“this house… is called by my name”), and it suggests that the response to foreigners is meant to draw outsiders toward acknowledgment and reverence, not merely to provide isolated favors without any connection to Yahweh’s revealed name.

Question 3

How do vv. 44–45 describe Israel praying during military campaigns, and what are the key reference points of direction and place?

Accepted Answer

The battle scenario is presented as something Israel undertakes “by whatever way you shall send them” (v. 44), implying that the campaign is not merely self-chosen but understood as within God’s direction. Even while away from Jerusalem, they pray “toward the city which you have chosen” and “toward the house which I have built for your name” (v. 44). Direction matters because it keeps prayer oriented to God’s chosen location and the temple associated with his name. Solomon asks God to “hear in heaven” their prayer and supplication and to “maintain their cause” (v. 45), meaning to take up their case and act on their behalf.

Question 4

What chain of events leads to exile in vv. 46–47, and what does the passage say about human sin?

Accepted Answer

The passage begins with Israel sinning against God, and it adds a general statement: “there is no man who doesn’t sin” (v. 46). In the prayer’s logic, sin leads to divine anger, which leads to Israel being “delivered” to an enemy, and then to captivity in the enemy’s land, whether far or near (v. 46). In exile, the turning point is inner change expressed in words: they “repent,” “turn again,” and make supplication, openly admitting wrongdoing (“We have sinned… done perversely… dealt wickedly,” v. 47). The text treats sin as universal among people and exile as a severe but not final consequence when repentance is possible.

Question 5

In vv. 48–50, what does “return… with all their heart and with all their soul” look like, and what outcomes does Solomon request?

Accepted Answer

The “return” is described both as inward and outward: wholehearted allegiance (“with all their heart and… soul,” v. 48) and a concrete act of praying toward specific covenant markers—“their land,” “the city which you have chosen,” and “the house… built for your name” (v. 48). Solomon asks God to hear from heaven, again using the same heaven-focused language as earlier (v. 49). He repeats “maintain their cause” (v. 49), and then adds two outcomes: forgiveness of sins and transgressions (v. 50), and a change in the captors’ attitude—God granting compassion so that captors show compassion (v. 50). Restoration includes both spiritual pardon and social relief in enemy hands.

Question 6

How do vv. 51–53 ground these requests in Israel’s identity and story, and why does Solomon bring Moses and Egypt into it?

Accepted Answer

Solomon gives reasons meant to support the petitions. Israel is called God’s “people” and “inheritance,” and the exodus is recalled: God brought them out of Egypt, described as an “iron furnace” (v. 51), emphasizing hardship and deliverance. Solomon asks that God’s “eyes may be open” to both the king’s and the people’s supplications (v. 52), implying ongoing attentiveness. The final grounding is covenant history: God “separated them from among all the peoples of the earth” to be his inheritance, and this was spoken “by Moses” at the time of the exodus (v. 53). The prayer appeals to established promises and past acts of rescue as the basis for hearing and mercy.
