Question 1

In verse 10, what is the connection between “this salvation” and “the grace that would come to you”?

Accepted Answer

Peter treats “this salvation” and “the grace that would come to you” as describing the same saving gift from two angles. “Salvation” names the outcome; “grace” names it as God’s undeserved gift. The prophets are said to have prophesied about that grace and to have pursued understanding of it with great effort. The phrase “to you” narrows the target: the prophets were speaking beyond their own time toward later recipients. So Peter frames his audience’s salvation as something promised and investigated long before it arrived.

Question 2

What do “sought and searched diligently” suggest about the prophets’ own grasp of what they spoke?

Accepted Answer

The wording implies the prophets did not experience their message as simple or fully transparent. They proclaimed something true, yet they also had questions about what it meant and when it would happen. Their “seeking” and “searching” signal sustained inquiry rather than casual curiosity. At the same time, Peter still treats their message as real prophecy, not guesswork. The prophets’ struggle to understand highlights both the depth of what God was revealing and the fact that its full shape would become clearer later, when the “grace” reached Peter’s audience.

Question 3

According to verse 11, what were the prophets trying to find out, and what was providing the signal?

Accepted Answer

Peter says they were “searching for what or what kind of time” was being indicated. That covers at least two things: timing (when) and the character of the period or circumstances (what sort of time). The signal came from “the Spirit of Christ” in them, who was “pointing to” future realities. So the prophets’ inquiry is presented as responsive to the Spirit’s witness: the Spirit gave real forward-looking testimony, and the prophets tried to understand its timetable and setting as best they could.

Question 4

How does the passage describe the content of the Spirit’s earlier testimony (v.11)?

Accepted Answer

The content is summarized in a two-part sequence: “the sufferings of Christ” and “the glories that should follow.” Peter stresses order and connection. The future Christ would suffer, and afterward would come “glories” (plural), implying more than a single honor moment. The passage does not spell out each event, but it does treat the sufferings and subsequent honors as the core storyline the Spirit was signaling in advance. That storyline is presented as central to understanding why the prophets were so intent on the timing and circumstances.

Question 5

In verse 12, what does it mean that the prophets were serving “not to themselves, but to you”?

Accepted Answer

Peter says it was revealed to the prophets that their ministry’s main beneficiaries were later people. That does not mean the prophets had no value for their own generation, but it does mean the fullest reception of what they announced was reserved for “you,” Peter’s present audience. The point is about where the message was headed in God’s plan: the prophetic witness was aimed toward the later unveiling and announcement of these realities. Peter uses this to locate the readers within a long timeline in which earlier servants prepared the way for later hearers.

Question 6

How does verse 12 relate human preaching to the Holy Spirit “sent from heaven”?

Accepted Answer

Peter describes the message as now “announced” through those who preached the gospel. The preaching is genuinely human communication (“those who preached”), yet it is also presented as occurring “by the Holy Spirit sent forth from heaven.” That links the present proclamation to divine initiative and power without removing human agency. It also connects the current gospel message to the same Spirit-active process described with the prophets in verse 11. The passage’s emphasis is that the present announcement stands in continuity with God’s earlier prophetic witness.

Question 7

What role do angels play in the argument (v.12), and what does their “desire to look into” add?

Accepted Answer

Angels appear as interested observers: they “desire to look into” these matters. Peter uses that to underline the significance and depth of what has been revealed about salvation, sufferings, and subsequent glories. The statement does not specify what angels know or do not know in detail; it simply portrays them as eager to examine these realities. In context, the effect is to elevate the importance of the gospel realities now announced to the readers: the prophets served toward it, and even heavenly beings are portrayed as intensely interested in it.
