Literary Context

Immediately after this section (2:9–10), Peter applies the image by naming the community’s shared identity and mission. Then he turns toward public conduct among surrounding society (2:11ff).
Historical Context
The letter addresses scattered Christian communities in Roman provinces of Asia Minor, living as small minorities within cities and villages shaped by local customs, household expectations, and public religious life. Their refusal to participate in certain shared practices could bring suspicion, slander, or social pressure. In that setting, Peter uses familiar building and temple imagery to describe a new communal center and a new kind of worship life that does not depend on a visible sanctuary. The quoted texts also reflect how these communities read Israel’s Scriptures as speaking to their present experience.

3) What “spiritual sacrifices” are (v. 5). Some interpret this broadly as the community’s whole life of worshipful obedience (praise, generosity, service, faithfulness). Others narrow it to explicitly worship practices (prayer, praise, confession, thanksgiving). The text names the category (“spiritual sacrifices”) but doesn’t list examples here.
4) What “they were appointed” refers to (v. 8). Some read it as God appointing the outcome that rejecters will stumble. Others read it as God appointing the stone’s role in God’s plan (a stone that will divide responses), with human disobedience being the immediate cause of stumbling. The sentence tightly connects stumbling with disobedience, but the exact scope of “appointed” is debated.
Peter uses dense metaphors (stone, building, priesthood, sacrifices) and short Scripture quotations, then adds brief explanatory lines. That style leaves room for more than one reasonable way to connect the images (especially in v. 8).
The paragraph clearly frames Jesus as God’s chosen cornerstone and the decisive point of reference for God’s people.
