Who are the “younger” and “elder”? Some read “younger” as all younger people (including women), and “elder” as older members generally. Others read “younger” as younger men in particular, and “elder” as appointed leaders in the church.

What does “be subject” amount to? Some take it mainly as practical deference and ordered cooperation (willingly yielding status and preference). Others hear a stronger sense of obedience to leadership direction, though still limited by the larger call to humility “toward one another.”

What is “in due time”? Some hear it as God’s timing within ordinary life circumstances (honor or vindication may come later). Others see a broader future reversal, where God’s raising up is most fully seen beyond the present situation.

Why the disagreement exists

The wording is brief and can map onto either age-based social patterns or office-based leadership. Also, “be subject” and “in due time” are flexible phrases: they can describe general posture and patience, or more specific structures and future vindication.
