Question 1

How do verses 1–2 use names, places, and family details to set up the story’s focus?

Accepted Answer

Verses 1–2 begin with Elkanah’s location and ancestry, which makes the story feel grounded in an ordinary household rather than a national crisis. The long family line slows the pace and signals that this family will matter for what follows. Then the focus narrows quickly: Elkanah has two wives, named Hannah and Peninnah. The key imbalance is stated plainly—Peninnah has children, Hannah does not. That contrast sets the emotional and relational tension that will drive the next scenes, especially because children affect status within the family.

Question 2

What repeated pattern does verse 3 introduce, and why does Shiloh matter in the narrative world of these verses?

Accepted Answer

Verse 3 introduces a steady rhythm: Elkanah goes up “from year to year” to worship and sacrifice to Yahweh of Hosts at Shiloh. This establishes that the family is connected to Israel’s public worship, not only private life. Shiloh is also anchored by named priestly figures—Eli’s sons, Hophni and Phinehas—who are said to be priests there. Even before any conflict is resolved, the setting links Hannah’s later anguish and actions to a recognized sanctuary and its leadership, making the coming events more than a domestic matter.

Question 3

What does the distribution of “portions” in verses 4–5 reveal about the setting and about Elkanah’s relationship to each wife?

Accepted Answer

The “portions” show that sacrifice includes a meal where food is shared out within the family group. Elkanah gives portions to Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters, highlighting that she is surrounded by children in this scene. Hannah, however, receives a “double portion,” and the narrator connects it to Elkanah’s love for her. Whatever the exact social meaning of “double,” the action is public and noticeable. It reveals affection and preference, but it also sets up why this meal could intensify rivalry and pain rather than soothe it.

Question 4

How does the narrator explain Hannah’s childlessness, and what effect does the repeated explanation have (vv.5–6)?

Accepted Answer

Twice the narrator states that “Yahweh had shut up her womb” (vv.5–6). Within the story’s own framing, Hannah’s lack of children is not explained by her choices or moral failure; it is presented as something outside her control and ultimately under God’s governance. Repeating the point does two things: it keeps the reader from treating infertility as a mere background detail, and it makes the conflict with Peninnah sharper, because Peninnah’s taunting is aimed at something the narrator has already marked as a painful burden, not a simple personal deficiency.

Question 5

What does calling Peninnah “her rival” and describing repeated provocation suggest about the nature of the conflict (vv.6–7)?

Accepted Answer

The label “rival” frames the relationship as ongoing competition within the household, not a single argument. The text says Peninnah provoked Hannah “sore” and did so repeatedly, with the apparent goal of making her fret. The mention of “year by year” reinforces persistence: the pain is renewed in cycles, especially when they go up to Yahweh’s house. The conflict is therefore both relational (one wife targeting the other) and situational (triggered by the social visibility of worship and the family meal).

Question 6

How is Hannah’s grief described in verse 7, and what does that add to the storyline at this early stage?

Accepted Answer

Verse 7 describes Hannah’s grief with outward, embodied signs: she weeps and does not eat. This presents her distress as deep and persistent rather than mild disappointment. The detail also shows that the problem is not merely “having no children” as an abstract fact; it affects her ability to participate in the shared meal that is part of worship. By showing Hannah unable to eat at the very time the family is supposed to celebrate in Yahweh’s presence, the narrative builds emotional pressure and prepares for why she will soon respond in a decisive way.

Question 7

What tensions are held together in these verses between worship practices and family dysfunction?

Accepted Answer

These verses hold two realities side by side. On one hand, Elkanah faithfully participates in regular worship at Shiloh and offers sacrifices; the family is present at Yahweh’s house as part of Israel’s religious life. On the other hand, the same setting becomes a stage for favoritism, rivalry, and humiliation: Elkanah’s extra portion for Hannah is visible, and Peninnah’s provoking is described as recurring during these trips. The text does not treat worship attendance as automatically removing family conflict. Instead, worship and dysfunction coexist, and the holy setting can even intensify what is already painful.
