Question 1

What details does the narrator give to explain why Eli misread Hannah’s prayer (vv. 12–13)?

Accepted Answer

The narrator slows down to show what Eli can see and what he cannot. Eli “marks her mouth,” noticing visible lip movement. At the same time, the narrator explains Hannah’s inner action: she is “speaking in her heart,” and “her voice was not heard.” The mismatch—moving lips without audible words—leads directly to Eli’s conclusion that she is drunk. The passage frames this as a knowledge gap: Eli is interpreting external signs without access to Hannah’s internal reality. That sets up the conflict and makes Hannah’s later explanation credible and necessary.

Question 2

How does Eli’s initial speech (v. 14) characterize what he thinks is happening?

Accepted Answer

Eli speaks as if he is dealing with an ongoing, blameworthy behavior. He asks, “How long will you be drunken?” which assumes a continuing state rather than a one-time odd moment. He then tells her to “put away your wine,” treating the situation as something she must stop and remove from herself. The tone is sharp and corrective, fitting his role as a gatekeeper in the sanctuary space. Nothing in his words shows uncertainty; he acts on his assumption rather than asking a clarifying question first.

Question 3

What key claims does Hannah make in her defense (vv. 15–16), and how do they answer Eli’s accusation?

Accepted Answer

Hannah makes three linked claims. First, she denies the charge: she has drunk neither wine nor strong drink. Second, she offers an alternative explanation: she has “poured out” her “soul” before Yahweh, presenting her behavior as prayer, not intoxication. Third, she asks Eli not to count her as a “wicked woman,” explaining that her speech and manner come from “the abundance” of her complaint and provocation—deep inner pressure that has overflowed. Together these points answer both the surface accusation (drinking) and the deeper social judgment (being morally suspect).

Question 4

How does Hannah’s manner of speaking relate to power and status in the scene (vv. 15, 16, 18)?

Accepted Answer

Hannah’s words show deference while still correcting Eli. She addresses him as “my lord” and calls herself his “handmaid,” signaling lower status and respect for his position. Yet she firmly says “No,” denies drinking, and redefines what is happening as prayerful anguish. After Eli’s response, she again uses deferential language—asking to find favor in his sight—before leaving. The passage presents a strong but respectful self-advocacy: she does not accept the label Eli places on her, but she engages him within the social expectations of the sanctuary setting.

Question 5

What changes in Eli’s response between vv. 14 and 17, and what does he say in v. 17?

Accepted Answer

Eli shifts from accusation to blessing. In v. 14 he assumes wrongdoing and commands her to stop. By v. 17, after hearing her explanation, he answers with dismissal in peace and a positive request: “Go in peace; and the God of Israel grant your petition that you have asked of him.” The reversal is stark: he no longer treats her as a problem in the sanctuary but as a legitimate petitioner before Israel’s God. The content of his words also ties Hannah’s private request to public recognition—he validates that she has a “petition” before God.

Question 6

What does the narrative highlight about Hannah’s condition at the end of the scene (v. 18), and what has not yet happened?

Accepted Answer

By the end, Hannah’s outward state changes immediately: she “went her way, and ate,” and her face is “not sad any more.” The passage highlights emotional and physical steadiness—she can take food and no longer shows visible grief. What has not yet happened in this section is the granting of the request in the storyline; the later conception and birth are reported after this scene. That order matters: the text connects her renewed composure to the exchange with Eli (misreading corrected and blessing spoken), not to a reported outcome yet.

Question 7

How does the scene portray the relationship between visible behavior in worship and inner spiritual reality (vv. 12–16)?

Accepted Answer

The scene emphasizes that outward behavior can be ambiguous. Hannah’s lip movement looks suspicious to Eli because it lacks audible words, and he assigns a moral explanation (drunkenness). The narrator, however, reveals that the real action is inward: she is speaking “in her heart” and “pouring out” her soul to Yahweh. The passage therefore distinguishes appearance from intention and shows how quickly a public setting can turn inner distress into public misunderstanding. It also shows that speech—Hannah’s explanation—can bridge that gap by naming the inner reality plainly.
