Question 1

What does the step-by-step “taking” of Benjamin, then Matrites, then Saul accomplish in the story?

Accepted Answer

The narrowing process functions as a public way of identifying Saul in front of “all the tribes.” It turns Saul’s kingship from a private matter into a community-recognized decision. The text explicitly claims the outcome (Saul is “taken”) and then has Samuel interpret it: “You see him whom Yahweh has chosen.” Even though the mechanics of “taking” are not explained, the storyline emphasizes that Saul’s selection is not random guesswork or political maneuvering; it is presented as Yahweh-guided and publicly verified in the assembly.

Question 2

Why does the narrative emphasize that Saul “could not be found” and that they ask Yahweh again?

Accepted Answer

The missing king creates a brief crisis right at the moment of confirmation: the chosen man is not standing where he should be. The further inquiry to Yahweh highlights that the assembly treats Yahweh as the one who can resolve the problem, not simply the crowd’s searching. The text’s explicit point is that Yahweh identifies Saul’s location (“he has hid himself among the baggage”). That answer bridges the gap between the selection outcome and Saul’s actual presentation, keeping the focus on divine guidance even in an awkward moment.

Question 3

How do Saul’s hiding and his physical description work together in the presentation scene?

Accepted Answer

The passage juxtaposes Saul’s concealment with his striking visibility once he is retrieved. He hides among baggage, but when he stands “among the people,” he is taller than everyone “from his shoulders and upward.” The narrative effect is contrast: the one trying not to be seen is also the one who most stands out. The text does not explain Saul’s motive for hiding, so readers can’t prove whether it signals fear, humility, or something else. What is clear is that his appearance supports Samuel’s public announcement that there is “none like him among all the people.”

Question 4

What exactly does the crowd’s shout (“Long live the king”) show—and what does it not show?

Accepted Answer

It clearly shows that a large public response affirms Saul as king in that moment; they treat him as installed and worthy of loyalty. Combined with Samuel’s statement that Yahweh has chosen him, it signals public recognition. But the passage quickly qualifies the idea of full national unity: “certain worthless fellows” reject Saul, question his ability to save, and refuse a present. So the shout shows acclamation, not unanimous agreement. It also does not by itself define what kind of king Saul will be; that is left to later narrative testing.

Question 5

What can be said from the text about “the manner of the kingdom” and why Samuel writes it down?

Accepted Answer

Explicitly, Samuel “told the people the manner of the kingdom,” wrote it “in a book,” and placed it “before Yahweh.” The text does not quote the content, so claims about specific laws or limits must remain inference. Still, the actions suggest this “manner” was meant to be stable and publicly knowable (written), and also religiously accountable (placed before Yahweh). In context—right after acclamation and before everyone goes home—it functions like an official framing of what kingship will look like in Israel, not merely a spontaneous celebration.

Question 6

What does verse 26 add about Saul’s early support, and how is God described as involved?

Accepted Answer

Verse 26 shows that Saul does not immediately move into a new capital or court scene; he goes “to his house to Gibeah.” Yet he is not alone: “there went with him the host, whose hearts God had touched.” The explicit claim is that God is involved in forming a loyal following by affecting their “hearts” (their inner disposition toward Saul). The passage does not say these supporters are the whole nation, and it does not say Saul recruited them through persuasion or coercion. It presents their loyalty as, at least in part, divinely enabled.

Question 7

How do verses 27a–b portray the first opposition to Saul, and what is Saul’s response?

Accepted Answer

The opposition is verbal and symbolic. Some men question Saul’s capacity (“How shall this man save us?”), despise him, and refuse to bring a present—an act that signals withholding honor and loyalty. The text labels them “worthless fellows,” which indicates strong narrator/author judgment even if their stated concern sounds practical (deliverance). Saul’s response is restraint: “he held his peace.” The passage does not say Saul forgave them, punished them, or negotiated. It simply shows that at the outset of his kingship, he does not retaliate immediately.
