Watchmen at Gibeah see the Philistine “multitude” dispersing, signaling rout rather than ordered withdrawal. Saul orders a muster/count to identify who is missing and learns Jonathan and his armor-bearer are absent.
vv. 18–19: Consultation begins, then is interrupted
Saul calls for priestly involvement connected with Israel’s sacred object, but as the noise and confusion in the Philistine camp intensify, Saul abruptly stops the action and moves to capitalize on the moment.
v. 20: Arrival at a chaotic melee
Saul and his men reach the fighting and find Philistines striking one another—an internal breakdown that makes Israel’s counterattack feasible.
vv. 21–23: Defections and regrouping expand the pursuit
Israelites previously with the Philistines switch sides, and others emerge from hiding in the hill country to join the chase. The battlefront shifts in the direction of Beth-aven as the pursuit spreads.
