How literal the offer of single combat is (vv. 9–10). Some think Goliath is making a real, customary proposal to resolve a standoff; others think the “terms” mainly function as intimidation, since nothing forces the Philistines to accept defeat later. The narrative reports the offer but does not comment on his sincerity.
Why the disagreement exists The Hebrew phrasing behind “the Philistine” can sound either like a title or a generic label, depending on how it is read in context. Also, the text narrates the challenge and its effect (fear) without narrating any enforcement mechanism for the winner-take-all terms.
