Saul announces a plan; Jonathan warns David Saul tells Jonathan and his servants that David should be killed. The narrator immediately contrasts this with Jonathan’s deep affection for David. Because of that loyalty, Jonathan informs David of Saul’s intent and urges him to protect himself the next morning by hiding in a secret place.

The setting is Israel’s early monarchy, where the king’s court includes sons, servants, and military leaders who depend on the ruler’s favor and protection. Two questions tend to be read differently.
How firm is Saul’s oath? Some read Saul’s “As Yahweh lives” as a genuine policy reversal: Saul is held back by moral argument and solemn speech. Others read it as a temporary concession under pressure, since later episodes show Saul returning to the pursuit of David. The text itself only reports the oath and immediate restoration (vv.6–7), not Saul’s long-term follow-through.
What does “innocent blood” mean here? Many take Jonathan’s phrase as a moral category with serious consequences: killing David would be wrongful and would stain Saul with guilt (v.5). Others stress its courtroom-like force: Jonathan is arguing that Saul has no valid grounds for execution (“without a cause”), so Saul would be acting against justice as king (vv.4–5). Both readings fit the language, and the narrative leans on the power of the accusation to stop the killing.
Why the disagreement exists The passage is brief and reports outcomes without explaining Saul’s inner change (or lack of it). It also uses strong moral wording (“sin,” “innocent blood”) while being set inside a royal household where orders and executions could be political tools. That mix invites readers to weigh Saul’s oath either as sincere repentance or as momentary restraint.
What this passage clearly contributes The text contributes a concrete picture of how leadership failure, truth-telling counsel, and solemn oaths interact in Israel’s monarchy. Explicitly, it ties David’s past deliverance of Israel to Yahweh’s action (“Yahweh worked a great victory,” v.5), while showing that human decisions in the court can either align with that good or oppose it. It also clarifies Jonathan’s role as a protective mediator: he prevents immediate bloodshed by confronting Saul with what Saul “saw” and “did rejoice” in, and by naming the planned killing as sin and unjust violence (vv.4–5).
