Question 1

What details in verses 22–23 emphasize how widely known Eli’s sons’ actions were?

Accepted Answer

The narrator stresses scope in multiple ways: Eli “heard all” that his sons were doing, and it was being done “to all Israel.” Eli also says he hears of their “evil dealings from all this people,” implying reports are coming broadly from the community rather than from a single accuser. These phrases combine to present the misconduct as public, repeated, and socially damaging. Eli’s advanced age (“very old”) also contributes to the picture: he is late in responding, and the problems have grown to the point that they are common knowledge.

Question 2

What kinds of wrongdoing are explicitly named in verse 22, and what setting connects them?

Accepted Answer

Verse 22 highlights two headline offenses: harm done “to all Israel” and sexual wrongdoing described as “lay with the women who served at the door of the tent of meeting.” Both are tied to the sanctuary setting—the tent of meeting and its entrance—so the misconduct is connected to Israel’s worship center rather than occurring in a purely private context. The text does not give details beyond these statements, but it clearly presents abuse of authority and sexual exploitation as intertwined with priestly access and power at the place where worshipers come.

Question 3

How does Eli describe the effect of his sons’ actions on the wider community in verse 24?

Accepted Answer

Eli calls the news he is hearing “no good report,” but he focuses on the broader ripple effect: “you make Yahweh’s people to disobey.” That wording treats their sin as contagious or influential—people are being pulled into wrongdoing or driven away from faithful worship because of the priests’ behavior. The point is not merely that the sons are personally guilty, but that their leadership role makes their actions formative for others. In the narrative, the sons’ misconduct is portrayed as undermining trust and obedience among those who come to worship.

Question 4

What contrast does Eli draw in verse 25, and what point is he trying to make with it?

Accepted Answer

Eli contrasts sin “against another” with sin “against Yahweh.” For wrong between people, he says “God shall judge him,” implying there is a way for such cases to be addressed under God’s oversight. But for wrong “against Yahweh,” Eli asks, “who shall entreat for him?” His warning suggests a heightened danger when the offense is directly against God, especially in a worship context where one would normally seek help, mediation, or mercy. The rhetorical question presses urgency: their situation is not a minor dispute but a direct affront to the God they serve.

Question 5

What does the narrator add after describing the sons’ refusal to listen, and what does that addition do in the story?

Accepted Answer

After stating, “they didn’t listen to the voice of their father,” the narrator adds, “because Yahweh was minded to kill them.” In the story, that line functions as an explanation of where events are headed: judgment is not only a social consequence or a family failure but is tied to Yahweh’s intention to bring their lives to an end. It intensifies the seriousness of their refusal and signals inevitability within the narrative. At the same time, the text still explicitly describes their refusal as real—they “didn’t listen.”

Question 6

How does verse 26 function as a contrast to the preceding verses, and what does it communicate about Samuel?

Accepted Answer

Verse 26 abruptly shifts focus from Eli’s failing sons to Samuel: “The child Samuel grew on, and increased in favor both with Yahweh, and also with men.” This creates a deliberate contrast: the sons harden in wrongdoing and reject correction, while Samuel steadily matures and gains approval in two directions—divine and human. The verse also helps frame Samuel as a trustworthy figure emerging within a corrupted religious environment. In the larger flow of the chapter, it supports the theme that while one priestly line collapses morally, another servant is being prepared for a central role.

Question 7

Across verses 22–25, what do Eli’s words reveal about his understanding of the seriousness of his sons’ actions?

Accepted Answer

Eli’s words show he sees their actions as “evil,” publicly reported, and spiritually dangerous. He calls the report “not good,” but more importantly he interprets their misconduct as making “Yahweh’s people” disobey—so he recognizes communal and covenant impact, not only personal immorality. His contrast between sin against people and sin against Yahweh indicates he views their offenses as directly implicating God, likely because of the sanctuary setting and their priestly role. Even if his rebuke is limited and ineffective, his language conveys that he considers the situation grave and urgent.
