Timing, absence, and a meeting point Jonathan tells David that the next day is the new moon, and David will be noticed because his seat will be empty. David is to remain hidden for three days, then go quickly back to the earlier hiding place and wait by a specific landmark, the stone Ezel.
The arrow action that sets up the signal Jonathan will shoot three arrows to the side of the stone, acting as if he is practicing at a target. This creates a normal-looking reason for him to be near the agreed place.
The coded message spoken to the boy Jonathan will send a boy to retrieve the arrows. If Jonathan says the arrows are “on this side” of the boy, David should come because it means safety—“peace” and no harm—confirmed with an oath “as Yahweh lives.” But if Jonathan says the arrows are “beyond” the boy, David must leave; that wording signals that Yahweh has sent you away.
Literary Context
This section sits inside the larger story of Saul’s growing hostility toward David and David’s uncertainty about whether Saul truly intends to kill him. Just before this, David and Jonathan renew their commitment to each other and agree that Jonathan will sound out Saul’s intent at the royal meal. These verses are the “how” of that agreement: a timed test (new moon feast) and a prearranged signal. Immediately after, the narrative shows the plan carried out and forces a separation between the friends.
Historical Context
The scene assumes a royal household with formal meals tied to the new moon, a time when leaders could gather for scheduled feasting and decisions. David has a recognized place at Saul’s table, so an empty seat is meaningful and noticeable.
