This unit follows the massacre at Nob (22:6–19) and narrows the narrative to a single survivor to keep the priestly line in view. Abiathar’s arrival ties the flight narrative to the collapse of Saul’s relationship with a priestly household and sets up an ongoing David–priest association in the larger Samuel storyline.

The scene reflects early monarchic Israel, where royal authority could be enforced through court officials and armed retainers, even against local priestly families. Mobility between settlements and seeking asylum with a powerful patron were practical survival strategies amid political instability and intracommunity violence.
