David hands the dispute to Yahweh, not to his own violence David asks Yahweh to judge between him and Saul and to “avenge” him, meaning David wants wrong to be answered. Yet he draws a firm boundary: Saul will not be harmed by David’s own "hand" (hand). David places action in Yahweh’s realm while denying himself the role of attacker.
A proverb explains why David’s hand stays clean David quotes an old saying: wickedness produces wicked actions. David then repeats his conclusion: his hand will not be against Saul, presenting restraint as evidence about his intentions.

Literary Context
These lines come from David’s speech after a dramatic reversal: Saul has been hunting David, yet David has just had a clear chance to kill Saul and did not do it. The speech continues David’s attempt to prove his innocence and to expose Saul’s pursuit as misplaced. The logic moves from appeal to Yahweh’s judgment, to a reason for David’s restraint, to rhetorical questions that shame the pursuit, and back to a renewed appeal that Yahweh will decide and rescue. This section presses the contrast between what David could have done and what he insists he will not do.
Historical Context
The setting fits the early Israelite monarchy, when Saul is king and political stability is still fragile. A king’s security often depended on removing perceived rivals, and a successful fighter like David could be treated as a threat even without open rebellion. In this kind of society, personal vengeance and blood-feud patterns were common pressures, but public claims of restraint also mattered for reputation and legitimacy. David’s words assume a shared belief that Yahweh can evaluate disputes and can intervene in outcomes, even when royal power and armed force are on one side.
Theological Significance
David frames the conflict with Saul as a case that belongs before Yahweh. Explicitly, he asks Yahweh to “judge” between them and to decide the matter (vv. 12, 15). At the same time, David sets a clear limit on his own behavior: he repeats twice that his “hand” will not be against Saul (vv. 12–13; ).

What David is asking God to do when he says “avenge me of you.” Some read David’s request as asking God to punish Saul directly, possibly through harm or death. Others read it as a broader request for God to set things right—vindicate David, stop Saul’s unjust pursuit, and restore moral order—without specifying the method.
How the proverb is aimed. Some take the proverb mainly as a statement about Saul: Saul’s pursuit and violence come from a “wicked” source. Others take it mainly as David’s self-defense: if David were wicked, he would have acted wickedly when he had the chance, but he refused.
The tone of “dead dog” and “flea.” Some hear mostly humility and self-abasement (David stressing his insignificance). Others hear a sharper edge as well: an implied critique that the king is acting beneath his office by mobilizing against someone so minor.
The passage is brief and rhetorical. Key words like “avenge” can refer either to punitive action or to public vindication, and the proverb is quoted without a direct “this means…” explanation. Likewise, the images in v. 14 can function both as humble self-description and as pointed irony; the text leaves room for both.
This scene portrays justice as something David entrusts to Yahweh rather than seizing through personal violence. The explicit claims hold together: David names Saul’s wrongdoing, asks God to judge and deliver, and refuses to become the agent of retaliation himself (vv. 12, 15). The passage also links moral restraint with moral identity: David treats the refusal to do harm as evidence that he is not acting from “wickedness” (v. 13). Finally, it highlights the mismatch between Saul’s royal power and the smallness of the target, intensifying the sense that Saul’s pursuit is unjust and undignified (v. 14).
