v. 17 — Recognition and response
Saul identifies the voice as David’s and speaks with a familial tone. David answers with formal deference, acknowledging Saul’s status.
v. 18 — The charge is demanded
David asks why the king is pursuing him and presses for specifics: what has he done, and what wrongdoing is in his hand?
v. 19 — Two possible sources of the conflict
David proposes either that yahweh has stirred Saul (to be addressed through an accepted offering) or that people have influenced Saul (and are blameworthy for pushing David toward exclusion).
v. 20 — Plea for protection and proportionality
David asks Saul not to shed his blood and portrays the pursuit as disproportionate, comparing himself to something small and easily overlooked.
