Question 1

In v. 19, what two realities are linked together about Samuel, and what does the verse imply about the source of his effectiveness?

Accepted Answer

Verse 19 links Samuel’s continued growth with Yahweh being “with him.” The text presents Samuel’s maturity and his public role as developing alongside divine presence, not simply alongside training or ambition. It then adds that Yahweh did not let any of Samuel’s words “fall to the ground,” implying that Samuel’s effectiveness is not just personal skill; it is connected to Yahweh’s active support of what Samuel says. The verse frames Samuel’s reliability as something Yahweh safeguards, which becomes the foundation for later public recognition.

Question 2

What does the phrase “did let none of his words fall to the ground” communicate within the story’s flow?

Accepted Answer

Within the narrative, the phrase explains why Samuel becomes trusted: his words do not end up empty, wasted, or disproven. It fits the move from a private calling (earlier in the chapter) to a public reputation (vv. 20–21). The simplest point is reliability—people learn that what Samuel says carries weight because it is backed by Yahweh. Whether the “words” were mainly predictions that came true or a wider range of messages, the story uses the phrase to show that Samuel’s speech has confirmed authority rather than being treated as mere opinion.

Question 3

How does v. 20 describe the spread and scope of Samuel’s recognition, and what is the function of “from Dan to Beersheba”?

Accepted Answer

Verse 20 describes recognition as reaching across “all Israel,” clarified by the geographic span “from Dan… to Beersheba,” a standard way to indicate the whole land from north to south. The function is to show breadth, not just local fame at Shiloh. It portrays Samuel’s role as publicly known and broadly acknowledged. The verse also implies that Samuel’s status is not confined to one tribe or region; his identity as “a prophet of Yahweh” becomes a national point of reference, which matters in a period of fragmented leadership.

Question 4

What does it mean in v. 20 that Samuel was “established” as a prophet of Yahweh, based on the immediate context?

Accepted Answer

In context, “established” points to confirmation—Samuel is not only called, but his role becomes settled and recognized. The previous verse grounds this in proven reliability (“none of his words… fell to the ground”), suggesting that establishment involves observable validation over time. At the same time, the text’s emphasis that Yahweh was with him indicates a divine side to that establishment. So the passage presents a combined picture: Yahweh’s presence and support, and Israel’s widespread recognition of the result. The verse focuses on public certainty about Samuel’s identity and authority.

Question 5

What does v. 21 add to the previous verses about Samuel’s authority, and why return the setting to Shiloh?

Accepted Answer

Verse 21 adds that Samuel’s authority is sustained by ongoing revelation, not just a one-time event. It says Yahweh “appeared again” at Shiloh and explains this as Yahweh revealing himself to Samuel there “by the word of Yahweh.” Returning to Shiloh ties Samuel’s national recognition back to the original location of his call and anchors prophetic authority to a continuing source: Yahweh’s self-disclosure through speech. The verse also suggests continuity—Shiloh remains a key site where Yahweh makes his will known through Samuel.

Question 6

How do vv. 19–21 connect divine action and human recognition without collapsing them into the same thing?

Accepted Answer

The passage distinguishes the two while showing their relationship. Divine action is stated directly: Yahweh is with Samuel; Yahweh does not let Samuel’s words fail; Yahweh appears and reveals himself by his word. Human recognition is also stated directly: “all Israel… knew” Samuel was established as Yahweh’s prophet. The story’s logic is that God’s backing produces reliability, and reliability leads to recognition. But the text does not say Israel’s recognition creates Samuel’s authority; rather, recognition is presented as a response to what Yahweh is doing through him.
