Question 1

What changes in v.8 compared with the earlier calls in the chapter, and what stays the same?

Accepted Answer

In v.8 the repeated pattern continues: Yahweh calls, Samuel gets up, goes to Eli, and says, “Here am I,” because he thinks Eli called him. What changes is not Samuel’s behavior but Eli’s understanding. The text says Eli “perceived” that Yahweh had called the child. That shift turns the repetition into progress: the same misunderstanding happens again, but now it produces recognition from the mentor figure. The passage treats Samuel’s confusion as believable while presenting Eli’s perception as the key turning point.

Question 2

What does the text say Eli “perceived,” and why is that detail central to the scene?

Accepted Answer

Eli perceives “that Yahweh had called the child.” This is central because it explains why Eli’s next actions make sense: he stops treating Samuel’s visits as mistakes or disturbances and starts preparing Samuel to answer God directly. The narrative also clarifies roles. Samuel is the one being called, but Eli is the one who can name what is happening at this stage. Without Eli’s perception, the cycle of Samuel running back and forth could continue, and the story would not move toward the actual message Yahweh intends to deliver.

Question 3

List the steps of Eli’s instruction in v.9 and explain what each step assumes about what is happening.

Accepted Answer

Eli tells Samuel: (1) “Go, lie down,” returning Samuel to the place where the call has been occurring. This assumes the call will happen again in the same setting. (2) “If he call you,” assuming the voice is a real summons that will repeat, not a one-time confusion. (3) Samuel should answer, “Speak, Yahweh; for your servant hears,” which assumes the caller is Yahweh and that the right response is receptive listening rather than argument or fear. (4) Samuel obeys and lies down, showing the instruction is practical and immediately followed.

Question 4

What is the effect of Yahweh calling the name twice in v.10 (“Samuel, Samuel”)?

Accepted Answer

The doubled name signals focus and personal address. In the story it also confirms that the call is directed to Samuel himself, not to Eli and not to an unknown person nearby. Since earlier in the night Samuel misattributed the call, the repetition functions like a clear, unmistakable summons. The text says Yahweh calls “as at other times,” linking this moment to the earlier calls but now with Eli’s guidance in place. The double address heightens the seriousness of what is about to follow in the larger chapter.

Question 5

How does Samuel’s spoken reply in v.10 compare to Eli’s scripted reply in v.9, and what interpretive questions does that raise?

Accepted Answer

Eli instructs Samuel to say, “Speak, Yahweh; for your servant hears.” In v.10 Samuel says, “Speak; for your servant hears,” omitting the divine name as reported. This raises the question of whether Samuel slightly altered the exact words under pressure, or whether the narrator is summarizing the response rather than quoting it fully. Either way, the passage emphasizes the posture of listening and service as the key content of the reply. The text itself does not explicitly explain why the wording differs.

Question 6

What does the phrase “Yahweh came, and stood” contribute to the narrative in v.10?

Accepted Answer

It intensifies the sense of Yahweh’s presence right at the moment of calling. The text moves from Yahweh calling (a voice) to Yahweh coming and standing (a more embodied, immediate description). Narratively, that makes the encounter feel more direct and weighty before the message is delivered later in the chapter. Interpreters debate whether it implies Samuel saw some form or whether it is vivid storytelling to communicate nearness and attention. In either case, the verse portrays Yahweh as actively initiating contact, not merely sending an inner thought.

Question 7

Based on vv.8–10, what roles do Eli and Samuel each play in the call experience?

Accepted Answer

Samuel is the one Yahweh calls; he responds quickly, physically gets up, and is willing to answer—first to Eli, then to Yahweh. Eli is not the recipient of the call, but he becomes the discerner and teacher. He identifies that Yahweh is calling and provides Samuel with language and a plan to respond. The passage holds both together: divine initiative (Yahweh calls and comes) and human mediation (Eli’s perception and instruction). It also shows Samuel’s dependence at this stage: he needs help recognizing the source of the voice.
