The closing note about the “great stone” anchors the account in a known place, presented as still identifiable “to this day.”

Where interpretation differs

How many gold mice were sent. The verse says the mice were “according to the number of all the cities…belonging to the five lords,” including fortified cities and country villages. Some read this as a very large number—one mouse for every Philistine settlement. Others think the wording may be more general, stressing completeness (covering the whole territory) without requiring a literal count for every village.

Whether tumors and mice reflect one disaster or two. Some take the images as two sides of the same crisis (for example, mice as part of how the affliction spread). Others treat them as two distinct troubles that happened together and are both acknowledged in the offering.

What “to this day” signals. Many take it as the narrator telling readers that the stone was still known when the account was written down. Others read it more modestly as a conventional way of saying the location remained known for a long time afterward, without pinning down an exact time gap.

Why the disagreement exists

The text is brief and compresses information: it gives a clear principle (offerings correspond to cities) but does not provide an explicit number for the mice, nor a detailed timeline for “to this day.” It also assumes earlier story knowledge about the plague-like events, so readers infer how the two symbols (tumors and mice) relate.
