Question 1

What exactly is being listed in 1 Samuel 6:17–18, and what label does the text give these items?

Accepted Answer

The passage lists the gold objects the Philistines returned when they sent back the ark. Verse 17 names “golden tumors” and explicitly calls them a “trespass-offering” (a guilt offering) “to Yahweh.” Verse 18 adds “golden mice” as another part of the returned items. So the inventory is not merely describing valuable gifts; it frames them as a formal offering intended to address wrongdoing or offense connected with keeping the ark and the calamities that followed. The list reads like a final accounting at the end of the episode.

Question 2

How does verse 17 organize the five golden tumors, and what does that organization imply within the story?

Accepted Answer

Verse 17 counts the tumors city by city: Ashdod, Gaza, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron—“one” for each. The organization matches the known structure of five leading Philistine city-centers, so the offering is presented as representative and official rather than private. Within the story’s logic, the disaster was experienced across Philistine territory, and the response is mapped to their major political units. The careful listing also signals that the narrator wants readers to see an ordered, deliberate return—an intentional settlement, not a hasty abandonment.

Question 3

According to verse 18, what is the relationship between the golden mice and the Philistine cities?

Accepted Answer

Verse 18 says the golden mice were made “according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords.” That statement expands the scope beyond the five principal cities named in verse 17. It includes not only fortified cities (major, defended centers) but also “country villages,” indicating dependent settlements and rural communities. The text’s main point is that the mice correspond to the whole network under the five rulers. It portrays the crisis—and the acknowledgment of it—as reaching across the entire region, from strongholds to small villages.

Question 4

What details in verse 18 show the passage is trying to be geographically comprehensive?

Accepted Answer

Two phrases do the work. First, the cities are those “belonging to the five lords,” which frames the territory politically and regionally, not just as a loose set of towns. Second, it specifies “both of fortified cities and of country villages,” explicitly covering different kinds of settlements. The wording communicates that what is being counted is not limited to the elite centers but extends to the full range of communities under Philistine rule. Even without providing an exact numeral for the mice, the verse pushes readers toward a sense of total coverage and completeness.

Question 5

How do verses 17–18 connect to the earlier calamities in the ark narrative without retelling them?

Accepted Answer

The passage assumes prior knowledge of what happened when the ark was in Philistine territory and turns those events into symbols: “tumors” and “mice” are made into gold objects. By naming these as the items returned with the ark, the text links the offering to the experienced suffering and loss. It does not explain the mechanics of the calamity here; it simply preserves the association by choosing images that correspond to what the Philistines endured. The effect is to keep the memory of the crisis attached to the return of the ark and to the formal act of giving.

Question 6

What is the narrative purpose of mentioning “the great stone” and “to this day” at the end of verse 18?

Accepted Answer

The “great stone” functions as a physical landmark tied to the moment the ark was set down. By adding that it remains “to this day” in the field of Joshua of Beth-shemesh, the narrator presents the location as publicly knowable, not vague or mythical. It also links the inventory of offerings to a remembered site, strengthening the sense that this account is rooted in place and communal memory. The detail serves as a closing anchor: the reader is left with a concrete point on the landscape associated with the ark’s arrival and the returned offerings.

Question 7

What does the repeated matching of offerings to places (five cities; then all towns) suggest about how the text portrays responsibility or impact?

Accepted Answer

Explicitly, the text portrays the impact as broad: not only the five major cities but all the cities under the five lords, including villages, are within view. By matching the offerings to the geography, the narrative suggests that the crisis and the response were not isolated incidents. It frames the Philistine action as corporate and territory-wide: leadership centers are represented (the five tumors), and the wider network is acknowledged (the mice tied to all cities). This is an inference from the structure of the list, but it closely follows the passage’s own emphasis on comprehensive coverage.
