Question 1

What changes in setting occur across verses 25–27, and what do those changes do for the narrative?

Accepted Answer

The passage moves in stages: from the high place (a public worship setting) down into the city, then to a rooftop conversation, then early in the morning out “abroad,” and finally to the edge of the city. Each move narrows attention onto Samuel and Saul. The rooftop is quieter than the public meal setting just before this, and the city edge becomes even more controlled once the servant is sent ahead. Narratively, these shifts build anticipation and mark the coming message as significant enough to require privacy and careful timing.

Question 2

What does the text explicitly say Samuel does to create a private conversation with Saul?

Accepted Answer

At the end of the city, Samuel instructs Saul to have the servant go on ahead, and the servant does. Then Samuel tells Saul to stand still “first,” meaning before continuing the journey. These actions remove a third party and pause travel so Samuel can speak without interruption. The text does not say Samuel distrusts the servant or fears opposition; it simply shows deliberate management of who is present for the conversation and when it happens, highlighting the importance of what Samuel is about to say.

Question 3

How does verse 26 portray the relationship dynamics between Samuel and Saul in this moment?

Accepted Answer

Samuel initiates and directs: he calls to Saul, tells him to get up, and states the plan to “send you away.” Saul responds by rising, and the two go out together. The text’s verbs emphasize Samuel’s leadership in the interaction and Saul’s readiness to follow his lead. Even without describing tone, the sequence suggests that Saul is being guided through a prepared sequence of events. That fits the broader chapter context where Saul has been singled out and hosted with honor, and now is being positioned for a further disclosure.

Question 4

What does “about the spring of the day” contribute to the flow of the story?

Accepted Answer

The phrase places the action at the break of day—early enough that travel can begin promptly. This detail does more than give a timestamp; it signals a transition from the prior day’s hospitality and conversation to the moment of departure when final words are given. In stories, early morning departures often mark turning points, and here it functions as the hinge between Samuel’s public honoring of Saul and Samuel’s private “word of God.” Whether understood as dawn or early morning, it frames urgency and intentional scheduling.

Question 5

What can and can’t be concluded from the rooftop conversation in verse 25?

Accepted Answer

The text can support a conclusion that Samuel and Saul had a significant private talk, because it singles out the rooftop as the location and narrates Samuel speaking with Saul there. However, it does not report the content, so conclusions about what was said are limited. It could have included personal guidance, explanation of earlier honors, or preparation for what follows, but the passage itself does not specify. The safest reading is to treat the rooftop talk as a narrative setup that leads into the more explicitly labeled message in verse 27.

Question 6

In verse 27, what does Samuel’s phrase “that I may cause you to hear the word of God” indicate about what is coming next?

Accepted Answer

It indicates that Samuel is about to deliver a message understood to be from God and that this message is important enough to require Saul’s full attention and a private setting. The wording suggests more than ordinary advice; Samuel frames it as “the word of God,” which in this narrative world carries authority and sets direction for events. At the same time, the verse only introduces the message; it does not yet state what the word is. So the passage points forward, preparing the reader for a decisive communication in the next scene.

Question 7

How does the servant’s presence and removal affect what the reader expects from the next passage?

Accepted Answer

The servant’s presence initially fits normal travel, but his removal signals that what follows is not routine. By having the servant go ahead, the narrative isolates Saul as the sole hearer of Samuel’s immediate words. That isolation increases suspense and suggests the message is personally addressed to Saul and potentially sensitive or foundational for his identity and role. It also anticipates a shift from general hospitality and travel arrangements to something that changes Saul’s trajectory, since the story highlights who is allowed to hear the “word of God.”
