Question 1

What motive does Saul give for ending the search in verse 5, and what does it reveal about the situation?

Accepted Answer

Saul proposes returning home because he expects his father’s focus will change: instead of worrying about the missing donkeys, his father will become anxious about Saul and the servant being gone so long (v.5). That motive shows the search has already lasted long enough to raise real concern, and it also frames Saul as thinking about how their absence affects others at home. The story’s tension shifts from finding property to the risk of becoming “lost” persons themselves in the eyes of Saul’s family.

Question 2

How does the servant describe the “man of God” in verse 6, and what reasons does he give for going?

Accepted Answer

The servant presents the “man of God” as (1) located in a nearby city, (2) publicly honored, and (3) reliable in his words—what he says “comes surely to pass” (v.6). The reason for visiting is practical: the man might tell them what to do about their journey—how to proceed and, by implication, how to resolve the problem that brought them out (v.6). The servant’s argument is built on the man’s reputation and perceived accuracy, not on any prior relationship Saul has with him.

Question 3

What problem does Saul raise in verse 7, and what does it suggest about expectations when consulting a seer/prophet?

Accepted Answer

Saul’s objection is logistical and social: they have no bread left and no “present” to bring to the man of God (v.7). That suggests there was an expectation that someone seeking guidance should not come empty-handed. The passage does not present this as bribery or manipulation; it reads more like normal etiquette or a recognized way of honoring the consultant. Saul’s question, “what have we?” also shows their limited resources and the cost of continuing the search versus returning home.

Question 4

How does the servant’s response in verse 8 move the plan forward, and what exactly does he offer?

Accepted Answer

The servant answers Saul’s concern directly by producing resources Saul apparently did not know they had: a “fourth part of a shekel of silver” in his hand (v.8). He offers to give it to the man of God “to tell us our way,” treating the silver as adequate to meet the expectation Saul mentioned. Narratively, this reverses the obstacle and keeps the servant’s proposal alive. It also highlights the servant’s initiative and role in directing the next step, while Saul becomes willing once the practical barrier is removed.

Question 5

What is the function of the narrator’s note in verse 9 about “seer” and “prophet”?

Accepted Answer

Verse 9 pauses the story to clarify terminology: in earlier Israelite usage, people would say “Come, let us go to the seer” when inquiring of God, and the person now called a “prophet” was formerly called a “seer” (v.9). The note helps later readers understand why the story may use older wording. It also indicates continuity—people sought divine guidance through recognized figures—while acknowledging that the common label for that role changed over time. The explanation supports comprehension more than it advances the plot.

Question 6

How do verses 6–10 show a step-by-step decision process, and where does the decision become settled?

Accepted Answer

The passage advances through dialogue and problem-solving. First, Saul proposes ending the mission (v.5). Second, the servant proposes a new route: consult the honored man of God (v.6). Third, Saul raises a barrier: they lack supplies and a present (v.7). Fourth, the servant provides a solution: silver to give for guidance (v.8). After the narrator’s clarification about the term “seer” (v.9), Saul finally affirms the plan—“Well said; come, let us go”—and the narrative reports action: they go to the city (v.10). The decision becomes settled at Saul’s verbal agreement in verse 10.
