Question 1

In verse 12, what three descriptions does Paul give of the people the church is to “know” or recognize?

Accepted Answer

Paul points to three connected features. First, they “labor among you,” highlighting steady, costly work done within the community, not from a distance. Second, they are “over you in the Lord,” meaning they have a guiding role that is connected to the Lord’s purposes rather than merely social status. Third, they “admonish you,” so their work includes warning or corrective counsel when needed. The descriptions are practical and relational: they work in the midst of the group, carry responsibility, and sometimes speak hard but helpful words.

Question 2

What does the command to “know” (recognize) add that “respect and honor” might not cover by itself?

Accepted Answer

“Know/recognize” points to acknowledging people for who they are in the community and what they actually do, rather than overlooking them or treating them as background figures. It suggests that the community should not be indifferent or unaware of those carrying leadership burdens. “Respect and honor” then describes the attitude and posture that flows from that recognition. In other words, recognition is the first step: seeing and acknowledging their role and labor; honor is the response that follows from seeing clearly.

Question 3

According to verse 13, what is the stated reason the leaders are to be highly regarded?

Accepted Answer

Paul explicitly gives the reason: “because of their work.” The basis is not their personality, eloquence, or social rank, but the labor they do for the community—work that includes ongoing effort among the believers, responsibility “in the Lord,” and admonition when needed. This makes the honor Paul describes closely tied to the value and burden of the service itself. The logic of the passage moves from what they do (v. 12) to how they should be treated (v. 13) on the grounds of that work.

Question 4

How does the phrase “in love” shape the meaning of “respect and honor” in verse 13?

Accepted Answer

“In love” frames the community’s esteem as more than formal politeness or reluctant compliance. The honor Paul calls for is to be expressed with genuine concern for these people, not merely as an abstract principle. It also keeps “respect” from becoming cold distance; the attitude is warm and relational. Because the leaders’ role includes admonition, “in love” can also imply that the community should interpret corrective words within a relationship marked by goodwill rather than suspicion, even when the warning feels uncomfortable.

Question 5

What relationship does the passage suggest between honoring leaders and being “at peace among yourselves”?

Accepted Answer

The instructions sit together as part of one flow. Recognizing and valuing those who guide and admonish can reduce friction: it lowers the likelihood that correction produces division, and it supports order in a young community. The final line widens the focus to everyone—peace is “among yourselves,” not only a leader’s task. Paul’s placement suggests that mishandling leadership (ignoring it, resenting it, or fighting it) can become a source of unrest, while proper recognition and loving esteem support the community’s peace.

Question 6

What does the passage make explicit about the scope of “peace”: is it directed only toward leaders, or toward the whole group?

Accepted Answer

Paul ends with a broad statement: “Be at peace among yourselves.” The grammar and wording point to the whole community, not just the relationship between members and leaders. While the earlier lines address how to relate to specific workers/leaders, the concluding instruction is community-wide and mutual. Peace is pictured as a shared condition within the group’s relationships. The verse does not define every step that produces peace, but it clearly identifies peace as a defining goal for the entire congregation’s internal life.

Question 7

What elements in the text indicate that Paul is talking about local leadership rather than distant authority?

Accepted Answer

Paul repeatedly locates the leaders’ work “among you.” They labor within the community, and their admonition is directed toward the people who know them personally. Paul himself is absent when writing, which fits the idea that day-to-day guidance depends on local workers. Nothing in these verses points to a far-away hierarchy; instead, the descriptions are concrete and community-based: work done in their midst, oversight connected to the Lord, and correction offered face-to-face. The passage reads like guidance for how the church treats its own recognized leaders.
