Question 1

Why does Rehoboam go to Shechem, and what does that imply about how his kingship is being established?

Accepted Answer

Rehoboam goes to Shechem because “all Israel” has gathered there “to make him king” (v.1). That implies the transfer of power is being publicly confirmed rather than treated as automatic. The setting suggests a formal, national moment where the new king is presented and acknowledged. Even if Rehoboam is Solomon’s son, the text depicts the people (or their representatives) as participating in the recognition of his rule. The choice of a central gathering place reinforces that this is a public, collective event with political weight, not merely a court ceremony in the capital.

Question 2

What does verse 2 emphasize about Jeroboam’s situation before this meeting, and why is that detail included?

Accepted Answer

Verse 2 pauses to explain that Jeroboam had been in Egypt because he had fled from King Solomon earlier. Then it states that he returned from Egypt after hearing about the assembly. The detail highlights that Jeroboam is not a random attendee; he is a known figure connected to prior conflict or danger under Solomon. By reminding the reader of his flight, the text suggests existing tensions carried over from the previous reign. His return at the moment of succession signals that the transition is occurring in a politically charged environment where old disputes can re-emerge.

Question 3

How do the people bring Jeroboam into the process, and what role does he play in verses 3–4?

Accepted Answer

The people “sent and called” Jeroboam (v.3), then “Jeroboam and all Israel” come and speak to Rehoboam (v.3). This presents Jeroboam as the leading figure in the delegation, whether as a chosen spokesman or as a prominent leader around whom the group gathers. The request itself is voiced in the plural (“your father made our yoke grievous”), indicating a collective complaint, not merely Jeroboam’s personal grievance. The text portrays the negotiation as coming from the nation through a representative figure rather than as a private appeal from one political actor.

Question 4

What exactly do the people ask for, and what do they offer in return?

Accepted Answer

They describe Solomon’s policies as a “grievous service” and a “heavy yoke” and ask Rehoboam to make that load “lighter” (v.4). The request is not framed as rejecting the monarchy; it is framed as renegotiating the terms of rule. They also offer a conditional promise: “and we will serve you” (v.4). So the passage presents a bargain—relief in exchange for loyalty. The text does not list specific policies (tax rates, labor quotas, etc.), but it clearly depicts the burden as significant enough to be the central issue at the coronation assembly.

Question 5

How does the passage portray Solomon’s reign through the people’s words, and what limits are there in using their description?

Accepted Answer

Through their complaint, Solomon is portrayed as having placed a “heavy yoke” on the people and requiring “grievous service” (v.4). This shows that at least some of the nation experienced his administration as harsh and demanding. At the same time, the passage is reporting the people’s perspective in a negotiation setting. That means it gives a genuine grievance within the story, but it does not provide a full assessment of Solomon’s policies or whether the burden was uniform across the kingdom. The text’s focus here is the political pressure being applied to Rehoboam at the start of his rule.

Question 6

What is Rehoboam’s immediate response, and what narrative effect does it create in verses 5?

Accepted Answer

Rehoboam does not answer the request immediately. He tells them to return after three days, and the people depart (v.5). The passage presents the decision as pending and makes the outcome uncertain. The delay can be read as time for counsel, calculation, or a display of authority, but the text does not state his reasons. What it clearly does is slow the narrative at the crucial moment: the nation has made a demand tied to its promised service, and the new king pauses before committing. That pause creates tension about what kind of king Rehoboam will be.
