A prophetic charge explains the crisis Shemaiah comes to Rehoboam and Judah’s officials while they are assembled in Jerusalem because of Shishak. He speaks in Yahweh’s name: they have “forsaken” Yahweh, so Yahweh has “left” them into Shishak’s power. The message links their prior action (abandoning) with Yahweh’s responsive action (handing them over).
The leaders’ humbled response The officials and the king “humble themselves,” taking a lower posture rather than resisting the accusation. Their spoken response is short: “Yahweh is righteous.” The text presents this as agreement that Yahweh’s judgment of the situation is fair.
A modified outcome announced after humility Yahweh “sees” their humility and sends another word to Shemaiah. Literary Context
This unit sits inside the larger account of Rehoboam’s reign and Judah’s vulnerability after the kingdom split. Just before, the narrative describes Rehoboam and Judah turning away from Yahweh and then facing Shishak’s invasion (12:1–4), which forces the leaders into a defensive gathering in Jerusalem. These verses function as a turning point: a prophetic explanation interprets the military threat, the leaders’ response is recorded, and then a second prophetic word adjusts the announced outcome. The logic moves from accusation, to response, to revised outcome (12:5–7).
Historical Context
The scene assumes a moment when Judah’s leadership is consolidated in Jerusalem under pressure from an external power. Shishak (commonly identified with an Egyptian ruler) represents a real geopolitical threat that could strip wealth, weaken fortifications, and destabilize a young kingdom. Rehoboam is ruling a reduced southern realm after the division from the northern tribes, so the political and military margins are thinner. The narrative pictures a crisis meeting in the capital, where prophetic speech interprets events and shapes the leaders’ choices in the face of invasion.

These verses present a crisis explained by a prophetic message. Judah’s leaders gather in Jerusalem because of Shishak’s threat, and Shemaiah states Yahweh’s interpretation of why this is happening: “You have forsaken me,” and therefore Yahweh has “left” them in Shishak’s hand (v. 5).
