Two phrases can be read more than one way.
“The first ways of his father David”: Some read this as “David’s earlier, better pattern,” contrasted with moral failures later in David’s life. Others take it more generally as “the earlier-established Davidic model,” meaning a standard of faithful kingship rather than a timeline inside David’s biography.
“Seek” (Baals vs. Yahweh): Some take “seek” mainly as worship and religious devotion. Others include seeking guidance and legitimacy—who the king consults and relies on—so it can cover worship, counsel, and covenant loyalty together (see seek).
The wording is brief and does not spell out the comparison points. “First ways” sounds like a time-based contrast, but it can also function like “original pattern.” Likewise, “seek” is broad enough to describe several kinds of allegiance, so interpreters decide how much meaning is in view based on wider biblical usage and the larger Jehoshaphat story.
Explicitly, the passage ties Jehoshaphat’s stability and honor to a particular kind of fidelity: rejecting Baal worship, pursuing Yahweh, obeying commandments, and not copying Israel’s practices. It also frames national strength as a gift Yahweh gives (“established the kingdom”), while still treating the king’s choices as real causes within the story. Finally, it portrays reform (removing high places/Asherim) as an extension of that loyalty, not merely political centralization.
