Zedekiah’s blow and challenge Zedekiah steps forward and strikes Micaiah on the cheek. He then mocks Micaiah’s claim by asking which direction Yahweh’s Spirit went from him to speak to Micaiah, implying that Zedekiah, not Micaiah, had been the true channel.

Finally, “until I return in peace” can be heard as “until I return safely,” or more broadly “until the campaign turns out well.” Both readings fit the king’s confidence and Micaiah’s counter-test.
Why the disagreement exists The wording allows more than one natural sense: Zedekiah’s question can be read as mockery or as a sincere challenge, and the expressions “that day,” “inner chamber,” and “in peace” are somewhat open-ended without further detail in these verses.
What this passage clearly contributes It clearly shows (1) institutional suppression of a dissenting prophet, (2) a public, outcome-based test attached to a claim to speak from Yahweh, and (3) a narrative expectation that the truth about the competing voices will be exposed by events. Micaiah’s final statement functions as a self-imposed verification: if the king’s safe return happens, Micaiah’s claim collapses; if it does not, the court’s punishment of him is exposed as mistreatment of a true messenger.
