Verse by Verse
March out, and a call to trust They start early and head toward the wilderness of Tekoa. While they are on the way, Jehoshaphat addresses Judah and Jerusalem’s residents. He gives two linked appeals: rely on Yahweh to be “established” (made steady/secure), and rely on Yahweh’s prophets to “prosper” (move forward successfully).
Singers appointed ahead of the army After consulting with the people, Jehoshaphat appoints singers to go in front of the armed forces. Their role is to praise Yahweh “in holy array” and to repeat a fixed thanksgiving line: give thanks to Yahweh because his loyal love endures forever.
Praise begins, and the coalition implodes At the moment the singing and praise begin, Yahweh acts by setting ambushes against the invaders, and they are struck down. The narrator then explains the mechanism: Ammon and Moab attack and completely destroy the people of Mount Seir, and when that is finished, the remaining forces turn on each other until mutual destruction spreads.
Literary Context
This scene comes near the climax of Jehoshaphat’s crisis narrative in 2 Chronicles 20. Earlier, a large hostile force approaches, Jehoshaphat seeks help from Yahweh publicly, and a prophetic word announces that Judah will not need to fight but should take their positions and watch. The passage shows the move from prayer and promise to action: the people physically “go out,” yet their leading action is praise rather than combat. The outcome functions as a visible confirmation of the earlier instruction and sets up the following report of plunder and public blessing.
Historical Context
Within the story world, Jehoshaphat is king in Jerusalem over Judah, and the threat comes from neighboring peoples named Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir (Edom-region).
