Reign data and overall direction Jehoshaphat’s reign is anchored with basic facts: he rules Judah from Jerusalem, begins at age thirty-five, reigns twenty-five years, and his mother is identified. The narrator then gives the main evaluation: he follows Asa’s path and keeps doing what is “right in the eyes of Yahweh,” without turning aside.
Limits and lingering problems Despite the positive summary, the narrator adds two “however” notes. The high places remain, and the people have not yet set their hearts toward the God their ancestors served. The effect is a mixed picture: official leadership trends right, but reform and public loyalty are incomplete.

The text moves from broad evaluation (“did right,” yet incomplete reforms) to a specific example (“joined himself” with a wicked partner), and ends with a terse outcome (“ships were broken”) that seals the evaluation.
Historical Context
Jehoshaphat belongs to Judah’s monarchy era, when Judah and the northern kingdom Israel existed side by side, sometimes hostile and sometimes cooperative. The sea-venture setting at Ezion-geber points to Judah’s access to the Red Sea region and the desire for long-distance trade routes associated with “Tarshish.” The partnership with an Israelite king reflects political-economic calculations that could bring resources or security. At the same time, the narrator frames international alliances as morally significant, and uses a named prophet to publicly interpret a failed project as more than bad luck.
Theological Significance
This closing paragraph gives a standard reign summary and then ends Jehoshaphat’s story with a small episode that functions like a warning label. The text explicitly says he began ruling at 35, reigned 25 years in Jerusalem, and his mother was Azubah (v.31). It also explicitly evaluates him as generally faithful, “walking” in Asa’s way and doing what was right in Yahweh’s eyes (v.32).

Together they plan to build ships to go to Tarshish, and the ships are made at Ezion-geber. A prophet, Eliezer son of Dodavahu from Mareshah, announces that because Jehoshaphat joined himself to Ahaziah, Yahweh has destroyed his works; the reported result matches the warning: the ships break and cannot make the voyage.
At the same time, the summary is not fully positive. The high places were not removed, and the people had not yet set their hearts toward the God of their ancestors (v.33). The account then points beyond itself to other written records for more details (v.34).
Finally, the story gives a concrete case: Jehoshaphat “joined himself” (allied himself) with Ahaziah of Israel (described as acting very wickedly), and they built ships intended to go to Tarshish from Ezion-geber (vv.35–36). A prophet interprets the project’s collapse as Yahweh’s response to that alliance, and the ships break before they can sail (v.37).
What “high places” means here. Some readers take the mention of high places (v.33) as indicating continued illegitimate worship practices that undercut Jehoshaphat’s “good king” evaluation. Others think “high places” can sometimes refer to tolerated local worship sites that were hard to eliminate even when official policy aimed at Yahweh-focused worship.
How to understand “not yet set their hearts.” Some read this as a broad spiritual assessment of the population’s ongoing lack of commitment during his reign. Others hear it as indicating partial progress: reforms happened, but full public loyalty lagged behind.
How direct the divine causation is in the shipwreck. The prophet’s message states, “Yahweh has destroyed your works” (v.37), which many take as a straightforward claim of divine action behind the failure. Others read the narrative as using prophetic speech to give theological meaning to a real-world disaster without explaining the physical mechanism.
Why the disagreement exists The passage gives short evaluations without much detail. It uses stock terms (“high places,” “set their hearts,” “joined himself,” “Tarshish”) that can be read more than one way, and it reports the prophet’s interpretation as part of the story’s meaning without describing how the ships were broken.
What this passage clearly contributes It portrays Jehoshaphat as broadly faithful yet incomplete in reform (vv.32–33). It shows the writer’s interest in both leadership and the people’s internal allegiance (“heart”) as factors in assessing a reign (v.33).
