Defeat by Syria and by Israel The verse says Yahweh “delivered” Ahaz (and Judah under him) into the power (“hand”) of the king of Syria. Syria strikes Judah and takes a “great multitude” of captives to Damascus. The verse adds a second blow: Ahaz is also “delivered” into the power of the king of Israel, resulting in a “great slaughter.”
Scale and stated reason for the slaughter The text identifies the Israelite leader as Pekah son of Remaliah and gives an extreme-sounding figure: 120,000 killed in Judah in one day, described as “valiant men.” It then states a reason for the catastrophe: “because they had forsaken Yahweh, the God of their fathers.”
Notable deaths among Judah’s leadership A named Ephraimite warrior, Zichri, is singled out for killing prominent Judeans: Maaseiah the king’s son, Azrikam the ruler over the palace/household, and Elkanah, described as next to the king.
