Seven days of glad worship and steady leadership The Israelites present in Jerusalem keep the feast of unleavened bread for seven days with “great gladness.” Priests and Levites praise Yahweh daily with loud instruments. Hezekiah then encourages the Levites who show “good understanding” in Yahweh’s service, and throughout the feast the people eat, bring peace-offerings, and make confession to Yahweh, the God of their ancestors.
The celebration deliberately expands The whole assembly consults together and decides to keep another seven days. What began as a seven-day observance becomes a two-week event, and the added days are described with the same tone of gladness, stressing that the extension is communal and intentional.
Generosity, readiness, and broad participation The text explains how the extended celebration is sustained: Hezekiah supplies a huge number of animals for offerings, and the princes add even more. As the offerings increase, many priests sanctify themselves, suggesting intensified service. Rejoicing includes not only Judah, priests, and Levites, but also those who came from Israel and even “sojourners” connected to Israel who are living in Judah.
Literary Context

It also ties the event to Israel’s remembered past by comparing the joy to earlier royal-era celebrations, ending with priestly blessing as a fitting close.

Two details in the description invite different readings.
Who is included in “the children of Israel” and those who “came out of Israel” (vv. 21, 25). Some take “Israel” here as a broad name for the whole covenant people, so it may include Judah as well as northerners. Others hear a more specific reference to survivors or visitors from the former northern kingdom, joining a Judah-based event.
What “making confession to Yahweh” means (v. 22). Some read it mainly as admitting wrongdoing (especially fitting the chapter’s earlier attention to irregularities). Others read it more broadly as verbal acknowledgment of Yahweh—openly affirming him, giving thanks, and agreeing with what is true about him—without the focus necessarily being on specific sins.
Why the disagreement exists The passage uses broad group labels (“Israel,” “assembly,” “sojourners”) without stopping to define them, and it summarizes actions (“confession”) without giving the exact words. Because Chronicles often uses “Israel” in more than one sense across its narrative, readers weigh context differently when deciding whether it is mainly inclusive (all the people) or more historically specific (Judah plus northerners).
