Assembly and public reading Josiah sends for and gathers the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. He then goes up to Yahweh’s house with a very broad cross-section: city inhabitants, priests, Levites, and “all the people,” regardless of status. In that setting he reads aloud “all the words” of the discovered book, so the content becomes publicly heard and not merely known by officials.
The king’s covenant commitment Standing in his assigned place, Josiah makes a covenant “before Yahweh.” The commitment is described as a whole-life pledge: to walk after Yahweh and to keep commandments, testimonies, and statutes with all his heart and soul. The goal is concrete performance—doing what the book’s covenant words require.
