Question 1

What do vv. 12–13 emphasize about where and how Solomon prays?

Accepted Answer

The narrator emphasizes both location and visibility. Solomon is “before the altar of Yahweh,” placing the prayer at the worship center of the temple court. The repeated note that the prayer happens “in the presence of all the assembly” highlights that this is corporate and public, not private. The added detail about the bronze platform in the middle of the court explains how Solomon could be seen and heard. His actions move from standing with hands spread to kneeling with hands still spread toward heaven, combining public leadership with a posture of humility and appeal.

Question 2

How does Solomon describe Yahweh in v. 14, and what does that description focus on?

Accepted Answer

Solomon describes Yahweh as uniquely incomparable—no other god is like him “in heaven, or on earth.” He then focuses not on raw power but on reliable relationship: Yahweh “keeps covenant and lovingkindness.” That covenant loyalty is directed toward “your servants” and is connected to a certain kind of life: those who “walk before you with all their heart.” In the logic of the prayer, this description supplies the reason Solomon can appeal to God confidently—God’s character includes faithfulness to commitments.

Question 3

What is the function of v. 15 in the flow of Solomon’s prayer?

Accepted Answer

Verse 15 functions as evidence supporting Solomon’s claims about God’s covenant faithfulness. After stating that Yahweh keeps covenant love (v. 14), Solomon points to a specific historical instance: God kept what he promised to David, Solomon’s father. The verse stresses the match between God’s words and actions: God spoke the promise and has “fulfilled it with your hand.” The phrase “as it is this day” indicates that Solomon sees present realities as proof that the earlier promise is already being enacted, making the next request (vv. 16–17) a continuation, not a new idea.

Question 4

According to vv. 16–17, what exactly is Solomon asking God to do?

Accepted Answer

Solomon asks God to “keep” what remains of the promise made to David concerning the throne of Israel. The request is framed as continuity: since God has already kept part of his word (v. 15), Solomon asks for the rest to be confirmed. He repeats the content of the promise: there will not fail a man to sit on Israel’s throne “in my sight.” He also repeats the stated condition: David’s “children” must take heed to their way and “walk in my law” as David walked. Verse 17 restates the request: let the spoken word be “verified” (confirmed).

Question 5

What does the conditional clause (“if only…”) contribute to Solomon’s appeal?

Accepted Answer

The conditional clause clarifies that the promise about David’s line is not presented here as automatic regardless of conduct. Solomon’s wording ties dynastic continuity to covenant obedience: David’s descendants must “take heed” and “walk in my law.” In the prayer’s logic, this does two things. First, it aligns Solomon’s request with the terms as already stated, showing he is not asking God to ignore the moral expectations attached to kingship. Second, it frames the throne promise as occurring under God’s oversight (“in my sight”) rather than as a purely political guarantee.

Question 6

How do Solomon’s posture (vv. 12–13) and his covenant appeal (vv. 14–17) work together?

Accepted Answer

The posture and the words reinforce each other. Public placement “before the altar” and “before all the assembly” matches the prayer’s national scope: Solomon is speaking as king for Israel. Kneeling, even from an elevated platform, portrays humility—Solomon’s authority does not place him above accountability. The hands spread “toward heaven” fits the verbal focus on Yahweh’s uniqueness and transcendence (“in heaven, or on earth”). Then the covenant appeal builds on that posture: Solomon is not bargaining, but calling on God’s known character (covenant-keeping) and demonstrated action (kept promises to David) as the grounds for asking for continued fulfillment.
