Question 1

What triggers the queen of Sheba’s visit, and what does her stated purpose reveal about how Solomon’s fame is being evaluated?

Accepted Answer

The visit begins with a report: she “heard of the fame of Solomon.” Her purpose is not described as sightseeing but as testing—she comes “to prove Solomon with hard questions.” That frames Solomon’s reputation as something that can be examined, not merely admired. In the passage, “fame” is linked to wisdom and public success, and the queen approaches it like a ruler assessing whether the report is reliable. The text also presents the visit as serious and official, shown by her large traveling party and costly goods, which fit a high-level royal encounter.

Question 2

What details in v. 1 characterize the queen’s arrival, and what do they suggest about the nature of the meeting?

Accepted Answer

Her arrival is described with scale and wealth: a “very great train,” camels carrying spices, “gold in abundance,” and precious stones. These details suggest an official royal visit shaped by diplomacy and status rather than a casual conversation. The goods imply both honor and the kind of exchange expected between major courts. The passage does not explicitly say what agreements are made, but it does show the meeting is happening at the highest level. The queen also comes with something to offer, not just questions to ask, which places the encounter in a political and economic world of alliances and trade connections.

Question 3

How does the text describe the queen’s conversation with Solomon, and what does “all that was in her heart” add to the scene?

Accepted Answer

The queen “talked with him of all that was in her heart,” which portrays an unusually open or wide-ranging exchange. The phrase suggests she brings more than prepared riddles; she speaks freely about whatever concerns, curiosities, or aims she carries. The text does not list topics, so readers infer the breadth from the language itself. In context, this openness sets up the next emphasis: Solomon’s ability to respond without being stumped or evasive. The scene is less like a single test question and more like extended probing conversation where her inner agenda is fully put on the table.

Question 4

What does v. 2 emphasize about Solomon’s responses, and why is that emphasis important to the narrative’s point?

Accepted Answer

Verse 2 doubles down on completeness: Solomon “told her all her questions,” and “there was not anything hid from Solomon which he didn’t tell her.” The first clause highlights his capability to answer; the second highlights that nothing was beyond his reach or left unexplained. Narratively, this makes her later astonishment reasonable: she is not impressed by a few clever replies but by consistent, comprehensive wisdom. The verse also portrays Solomon as transparent in the encounter—he does not withhold answers—reinforcing the idea that the queen’s test is fully met rather than partially satisfied.

Question 5

In vv. 3–4, what are the main categories of what the queen “sees,” and how do they together represent “wisdom”?

Accepted Answer

She sees (1) major construction (“the house that he had built”), (2) abundance and order at the table (“food of his table”), and (3) an organized court system: servants’ seating, ministers’ attendance, clothing, and cupbearers. Finally, she sees his “ascent” to the house of Yahweh. These are not abstract ideas; wisdom is presented as something that takes visible form in administration, provision, ceremony, and stable routines. The text links wise leadership to an orderly, well-managed royal environment. It implies that wisdom shows up in how a kingdom is run, not only in how a king speaks.

Question 6

What role does the reference to “the house of Yahweh” play in the list of observations in v. 4?

Accepted Answer

The mention of his “ascent by which he went up to the house of Yahweh” places temple access and worship-related space alongside palace life and court organization. Even though vv. 1–4 do not explain the theology of worship, the narrative frames Solomon’s public life as including a visible relationship to the central sanctuary. It also completes the picture the queen is evaluating: Solomon’s greatness is not only architectural and administrative but is connected to Jerusalem as a religious center. The queen’s astonishment therefore responds to a combined display of royal splendor and temple-oriented ceremony.

Question 7

What does the phrase “there was no more spirit in her” communicate in context, and what limits does the passage itself place on interpreting it?

Accepted Answer

In context, it communicates an overwhelming reaction after seeing the full display: Solomon’s answers plus the visible order and splendor of his court and his temple ascent. The immediate cause is cumulative observation, not a single miracle or threat. The phrase functions like saying she was left breathless or stunned. The passage itself does not specify whether this is awe, shock, exhaustion from travel, or some combination; it simply uses the idiom to mark the intensity of her response. What is clear is the narrative effect: the test has turned into convinced astonishment.
