Question 1

In 2 Corinthians 1:18, what reason does Paul give for saying his word was not “Yes and no”?

Accepted Answer

Paul’s stated reason is God’s character: “as God is faithful,” their word toward the Corinthians was not a contradictory “Yes and no.” The logic is that Paul’s message is tied to the faithful God he represents. The verse does not present Paul’s consistency as the ultimate basis for confidence; it places the weight on God’s reliability. This also shows why the issue matters: questioning Paul’s trustworthiness is not merely personal; it touches whether the Corinthians can trust the message they received as a stable word from a faithful God.

Question 2

How does verse 19 connect Paul’s integrity to the content of what he preached?

Accepted Answer

Paul points to Jesus Christ as the core of what was preached “among you” by multiple messengers (Paul, Silvanus, Timothy). The claim is not simply that the preachers were consistent; it is that the proclaimed Christ is not mixed or uncertain—“in him is ‘Yes.’” By anchoring the discussion in Christ, Paul suggests that the message’s stability comes from its subject. The mention of several preachers also supports the idea that the Corinthians received a unified proclamation rather than shifting claims from different leaders.

Question 3

What does Paul mean in verse 20 when he says all God’s promises find their “Yes” in Christ?

Accepted Answer

Paul presents Christ as the confirming point for God’s promises: whatever promises God has made, their decisive affirmation is “in him.” The verse does not list which promises are in view, but it describes a comprehensive scope (“however many”). The point is that God’s commitments reach clarity and confirmation in Christ rather than remaining uncertain. This supports Paul’s earlier denial of “Yes and no”: if God’s promises are decisively affirmed in Christ, then the apostolic message centered on Christ is not built on ambiguity or contradiction.

Question 4

In verse 20, how are “Yes,” “Amen,” and “glory to God” related?

Accepted Answer

The sequence is: God’s promises have their “Yes” in Christ; therefore, “through him” comes the “Amen.” The “Amen” is the confirming response that corresponds to God’s “Yes” in Christ. Paul then adds that this leads “to the glory of God through us.” The wording keeps Christ as the mediator (“through him”) and portrays the apostolic ministry as the means by which this Christ-centered confession spreads and takes shape in the community. The result is not praise of the messengers but honor directed to God.

Question 5

What does Paul claim God does for “us with you” in verses 21–22?

Accepted Answer

Paul emphasizes shared standing: God “establishes us with you in Christ.” He then stacks three images of God’s action: God “anointed” them, “sealed” them, and “gave” the Spirit as a down payment in their hearts. Together these images convey that God is the one who secures the relationship and marks the people involved as belonging to him. The “with you” language matters in context: Paul is not separating himself from the Corinthians but describing a common grounding in Christ and a common gift of the Spirit.

Question 6

What is the function of the Spirit as a “down payment” in verse 22?

Accepted Answer

Calling the Spirit a “down payment” suggests the Spirit is an initial installment that guarantees more will follow. Paul locates this gift “in our hearts,” emphasizing an inward, personal dimension rather than an external marker alone. The verse does not specify all that is guaranteed, but the financial image implies future completion of what God has begun. In context, this supports Paul’s argument about reliability: the same God who confirms his promises in Christ is already at work by giving the Spirit as a pledge, strengthening confidence in God’s follow-through.

Question 7

Why does Paul mention Silvanus and Timothy in verse 19?

Accepted Answer

Paul names Silvanus and Timothy to show that the Corinthians did not hear an idiosyncratic, shifting message from a single speaker. The Son of God was preached “by us,” and Paul specifies the recognized team involved. This supports his claim that the proclamation was not “Yes and no.” It also ties the Corinthians’ faith experience to a shared, public message rather than private persuasion. In the larger argument about trust, multiple witnesses reinforce that the message about Christ was consistent and dependable across the apostolic coworkers.
