Question 1

In v.19, what accusation does Paul raise, and how does he answer it?

Accepted Answer

Paul brings up the suspicion that he has been “excusing” himself—using his words to defend his reputation or explain away criticism. He answers by relocating the audience that matters: he speaks “in the sight of God” and “in Christ.” That means he presents his speech as accountable beyond Corinth’s shifting opinions. He then states his stated motive in plain terms: everything he is doing is for their “edifying,” their strengthening as a community, not for winning an argument for himself.

Question 2

What does Paul explicitly say is the purpose of “all things” he is doing (v.19), and what does that exclude?

Accepted Answer

Paul says, “all things, beloved, are for your edifying.” Explicitly, he frames his actions and speech as aimed at building up the Corinthians. That purpose excludes the idea that his strong tone is mainly self-serving or merely image management. It also excludes a purely destructive intent: even when he confronts problems, the stated end is their growth and stability. The term “beloved” reinforces that his critique is set within relational concern rather than detached condemnation.

Question 3

How does v.20 describe the possibility of mutual disappointment during Paul’s visit?

Accepted Answer

Paul fears that when he comes he may find them “not the way” he wants, and at the same time he may be “found by you as you don’t desire.” The passage presents a two-sided mismatch: Paul may see a church still marked by behaviors he has been addressing, and they may experience Paul in a way they dislike—possibly because his presence and response won’t fit their expectations. The text does not yet describe actions he will take, but it does show anxiety about a painful face-to-face encounter.

Question 4

List the relational and community problems in v.20. How do these items relate to each other?

Accepted Answer

Paul lists strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, factions, slander, whisperings, proud thoughts, and riots (disorder). The items move from inner attitudes (jealousy, proud thoughts) to relational expressions (anger, strife), to group-level fracture (factions), to speech that damages reputations (slander, whisperings), and finally to broader turmoil (“riots,” general disorder). The list reads like a cascade: internal rivalries spill into speech and group formation, which then destabilize the whole community.

Question 5

In v.21, what are Paul’s two fears, and how are they connected?

Accepted Answer

Paul fears (1) that “my God would humble me before you,” and (2) that he would “mourn for many” who sinned previously and still have not repented. The connection is that the church’s unresolved wrongdoing would become a public, painful reality at his visit. Being “humbled” likely points to personal lowering through grief and shame in the situation, while “mourning” describes his emotional response to continued resistance to change. The verse ties the leader’s pain to the community’s moral condition.

Question 6

What kinds of moral wrongdoing does v.21 specify, and what does “not repented” indicate?

Accepted Answer

Paul names “uncleanness,” “sexual immorality,” and “lustfulness.” Whatever the exact boundaries of each term, the list points to ongoing sexual sin and broader moral impurity expressed in unrestrained desire. “Not repented” indicates persistence: these are not only past acts but continuing patterns that have not been abandoned. The focus is not merely that people once failed, but that after prior opportunity and warning, “many” have not changed course.

Question 7

Who might “many” refer to in v.21, and what can (and can’t) be concluded from the text?

Accepted Answer

The text says Paul would mourn “for many of those who have sinned before now.” That clearly means more than a single individual, and it suggests a noticeable group within the church. However, the passage does not quantify whether this is a majority or a smaller but stubborn subset. It also doesn’t name the specific sins’ circumstances or whether they are concentrated in one faction. The safest conclusion is that Paul expects the problem to be significant enough to affect the whole visit and the church’s health.
