Question 1

What contrast does Paul set up between “we” and “many,” and why does it matter for the verse’s main point?

Accepted Answer

Paul places his team (“we”) over against “many” who “peddle the word of God.” The contrast matters because it explains the kind of credibility Paul is claiming: he is not merely saying his message is true, but that his manner and motive in delivering it are different from common patterns around him. The verse’s main point is an integrity claim—his team refuses to treat God’s message like a tradable product. That contrast also shows why he piles up further descriptors (“from sincerity… from God… before God… in Christ”) to define their stance.

Question 2

In plain terms, what does “peddling the word of God” communicate in this context?

Accepted Answer

“Peddling” presents God’s word as if it were merchandise. At minimum it implies using the message to gain some advantage—money, status, influence, or secure supporters. It can also imply the kinds of tactics associated with selling: shaping the message to please customers, hiding inconvenient parts, or using persuasive tricks. Paul doesn’t spell out which abuse he has in view, but the commercial picture signals that the problem is not just that people speak publicly; it is that they treat God’s message as a means to personal gain rather than a trust to deliver faithfully.

Question 3

How do the phrases “from sincerity” and “as from God” work together?

Accepted Answer

“From sincerity” speaks to inner motive and transparency: the speech is not a performance designed to manipulate. “As from God” adds the claimed source and authorization: they see themselves as sent, not self-appointed entrepreneurs of religion. Together, the phrases move from character to commission—first, the manner is genuine; second, the message and role are received from God. Paul is therefore grounding their speech in both truthful intent and a responsibility tied to God’s initiative, rather than a role constructed for profit or reputation.

Question 4

What is the force of saying they speak “in the sight of God”?

Accepted Answer

“In the sight of God” frames their speaking as occurring under divine observation and evaluation. It functions like an accountability marker: even if the audience misjudges motives, Paul claims a higher court is watching. In the letter’s setting—where Paul’s credibility is contested—this phrase also shifts the focus from public reputation to God’s knowledge of what is true. It does not prove others are corrupt; it asserts that Paul’s team understands their words as spoken with God as witness, which should restrain manipulation.

Question 5

How does “we speak in Christ” add to the argument, beyond “from God” and “before God”?

Accepted Answer

“In Christ” locates their speaking within their relationship to Christ and/or their role as Christ’s representatives. Alongside “from God” (source/sending) and “before God” (accountability), “in Christ” adds identity and sphere: their speaking is not merely personal opinion or self-branding. Paul’s wording suggests the message is tied to Christ and consistent with belonging to him. The phrase can carry an authority nuance (speaking as Christ’s agent) and an identity nuance (speaking as those whose lives are defined by Christ), and both fit the verse’s integrity claim.

Question 6

Why might Paul describe the problematic group only as “many” without naming them?

Accepted Answer

The verse does not identify the “many,” which keeps the focus on the behavior rather than on personal labels. Given the letter’s tense relationship with Corinth, naming opponents could intensify factional conflict or distract from Paul’s main purpose here: clarifying the nature of his ministry. The vagueness also suggests the issue may be widespread in the broader environment—traveling teachers and religious promoters could be suspected of selling their message. By saying “many,” Paul can highlight a common pattern while setting his team’s approach apart without turning this line into a detailed accusation list.
