Reaffirm love publicly Paul draws a conclusion from what he has just said (“therefore”): since the correction has been sufficient, he urges them to “confirm” their love toward the person. The point is not mere private feeling but a clear, recognizable action that communicates restored acceptance.
The earlier letter as a test of follow-through Paul explains why he wrote as he did: he wanted to learn what they were made of in practice—whether they would carry out what was needed. “Obedient in all things” highlights willingness to follow instruction even when it is difficult and socially costly.

Historical Context
Paul is writing in a strained season in his relationship with the Corinthian church, after an earlier painful visit and a severe letter meant to address a serious internal problem. The passage assumes a congregation capable of collective action—first to discipline, and now to reintegrate. Socially, public acceptance and public rejection carried heavy weight in a tight-knit group; continued exclusion could devastate a person and create factions. Paul also speaks as a leader coordinating unity across distance, urging the Corinthians to act in a way that protects the community from internal breakdown and outside pressure.
Theological Significance
Paul assumes a real wrong happened and that the church responded together in a way that brought meaningful correction (the prior “punishment” in 2:6–7). In 2:8–11 he argues that the next faithful step is a clear move from discipline to restored relationship: “confirm” love toward the offender.

Others hear “forgive” as a formal, community-recognized cancellation of the offense, closely tied to church discipline and restoration. The wording supports real relational change either way, but it does not spell out every social consequence.
Paul does not identify the offender or the offense, and he does not list the concrete steps the Corinthians should take. Because the case details are missing, readers infer what “confirm,” “love,” and “forgive” must have looked like in a first-century group where public acceptance mattered.
