Motive for persuasion and appeal to what God sees Paul says that because he knows “the fear of the Lord,” he works to persuade people. At the same time, he claims transparency before God: God already sees and knows his true condition. He then expresses hope that the Corinthians, at the level of their consciences, also recognize what is true about him.
Not self-promotion, but equipping the Corinthians to answer critics Paul denies that he is trying to recommend himself again. Instead, he says his speech gives them a reason to take pride in him (or in what he represents) so they can answer people who “boast in appearance, and not in heart.” The contrast is between what looks impressive outwardly and what is genuine inwardly.
Reframing “extreme” and “sober” behavior by its audience Paul addresses two possible perceptions: if he seems “beside himself,” he says that is directed toward God; if he seems clear-minded and controlled, that is for the Corinthians’ benefit. Literary Context
These verses sit inside a longer defense of Paul’s ministry character and aims. Just before this, Paul has spoken about appearing before Christ’s judgment seat and about living to please the Lord (5:9–10), which leads directly into his motive for persuasion (5:11). Immediately after, he describes the controlling force of Christ’s love and the meaning of “new creation” language (5:14–17). So 5:11–13 functions as a bridge: it connects his awareness of accountability to his public conduct, and it answers misunderstandings about his manner by contrasting outward impressions with inner intent.
Historical Context
2 Corinthians reflects a strained relationship between Paul and the Corinthian church, including criticism of his credibility, presence, and style. In a city shaped by Greco-Roman expectations of impressive speakers and public honor, leaders could be evaluated by polish, confidence, and visible status. Paul answers that kind of evaluation by emphasizing what God sees and by encouraging the Corinthians to respond to opponents who promote themselves. He also addresses rumors about his behavior—whether some thought he was unstable or overly intense—by interpreting both his intensity and his restraint as purposeful rather than performative.

Who is being “persuaded”? Some read “we persuade men” (v. 11) mainly as evangelistic outreach to outsiders. Others read it mainly as persuading the Corinthians (and other believers) about Paul’s sincerity and the truth of his ministry amid criticism. The text itself does not specify a single group; it fits Paul’s immediate defense of his ministry while still sounding like broader outreach language.
What does “fear of the Lord” emphasize? Some hear mainly reverent awe that motivates faithful ministry. Others hear a stronger note of accountability in light of what came right before (5:9–10). Both are compatible with Paul’s point: his persuasion is driven by taking the Lord seriously, not by image-management.
Paul uses compact phrases without naming the opponents or the target audience of “persuade.” He also speaks at two levels at once: (a) God’s full knowledge of his inner life (“revealed to God,” v. 11) and (b) the public controversy in Corinth about how impressive a leader looks (“appearance,” v. 12). Those features leave room for different, but reasonable, reconstructions of the immediate situation.
Explicit claims in the text: Paul connects his persuasive work to “the fear of the Lord”; he insists God already sees his true condition; he hopes the Corinthians’ consciences recognize that; he denies he is commending himself again; and he aims to arm them with an answer to people who prize outward show over inner reality. He also treats both “extreme” and “sober” modes as oriented to God and to the Corinthians.
Theological inferences (grounded but not stated as a formal doctrine): authentic ministry can be evaluated on an “inside/outside” axis—heart reality versus public performance—because God’s knowledge is deeper than human reputation. In this slice of the letter, Paul claims that his motives and tone are best understood in light of accountability to God, not the social competition of public impressiveness.
