Literary Context
This paragraph sits within Paul’s defense and explanation of his ministry, where he contrasts outward appearances with what God is doing through weakness and suffering. Just before, he says Christ’s love controls their actions and that a new creation reality reshapes how they view people (5:14–17). The logic then moves from “new creation” to “new relationship”: God restores people to himself and appoints messengers to announce and urge that restoration. What follows (6:1–2) continues the urgent tone, pressing for a timely response and warning against receiving God’s grace in vain.
Historical Context
2 Corinthians reflects a strained relationship between Paul and the Corinthian church, including earlier conflict and challenges to Paul’s credibility. In a city shaped by Roman status competition and public performance, Paul’s style and suffering could be read as unimpressive, and rival teachers could claim greater authority. This passage fits that setting because Paul is not only describing a general message; he is also explaining why his team speaks with weight and why the Corinthians should respond. The “ambassador” language evokes recognized practices of representation in the Roman world.
Theological Significance
Paul presents reconciliation as something God starts and carries out. God restores relationship “through Jesus Christ” (v.18) and then entrusts Paul’s team with both a task (“ministry of reconciliation,” v.18) and a message (“word of reconciliation,” v.19). The content of that message is that God, “in Christ,” is reconciling “the world” to himself and is “not counting” people’s trespasses against them (v.19).

1) Who is included in “us/we”? The text clearly uses “we/us” for Paul and his co-workers when it speaks of being entrusted with the message and acting as ambassadors (vv.19–20). Some readers extend “we/us” more broadly to include all believers as participants in the “ministry” and “word” of reconciliation in some sense. Others keep the focus mainly on Paul’s apostolic team in this paragraph, noting the immediate context of defending his ministry.
2) How broad is “the world”? The passage states that “in Christ” God was reconciling “the world” to himself (v.19). Some take “world” to mean humanity as a whole in scope—God’s reconciling action is not limited to one ethnic group or region. Others read it as broadly inclusive but not automatically applied to every person, because the paragraph still contains a direct appeal to respond (“be reconciled,” v.20).
3) What does “made him to be sin” mean? All agree Paul is not saying Christ committed sin (“knew no sin,” v.21). Interpreters differ on how to restate “made…to be sin.” Some understand it as strong legal-status language: God treated Christ as bearing the consequences of sin, so that trespasses are not counted against those being reconciled (v.19). Others take it as sacrificial/representative language: Christ became the sin-bearer or sin-offering figure on our behalf, without implying God viewed him as morally sinful.
4) What is “the righteousness of God”? The text states an intended outcome: “so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (v.21). Some read this mainly as a changed standing before God (a new “counting” of a person’s situation that matches v.19). Others emphasize transformation of life and identity—becoming people who embody God’s rightness in the world. A third emphasis appears in some readings: becoming God’s covenant-faithfulness-on-display (God’s own righteous action seen in a reconciled people). The passage itself compresses these ideas without spelling out the mechanism.
Why the disagreement exists Paul’s wording is dense and compressed, especially in v.21, and the paragraph shifts between (a) God’s action, (b) the messengers’ entrusted role, and (c) the audience’s needed response. Key terms (“world,” “made…to be sin,” “righteousness of God,” and “not counting trespasses”) can be restated in more than one faithful way, and the immediate context (Paul explaining his ministry) affects whether “we/us” is read narrowly or broadly.
What this passage clearly contributes This paragraph links reconciliation to God’s initiative and to Christ’s work, not to human self-repair (vv.18–19). It also links reconciliation to proclamation: God entrusts a message and sends representatives whose appeal carries the sender’s authority (vv.19–20).
