Question 1

In verses 18–19, what actions are attributed to God, and what is given to “us”?

Accepted Answer

Verses 18–19 put God as the main actor throughout. God “reconciled us to himself through Jesus Christ” (v.18), and God was “in Christ reconciling the world to himself” (v.19). Along with that reconciling action, God “gave” and “committed/entrusted” something to “us”: a “ministry” focused on reconciliation (v.18) and the “word/message of reconciliation” (v.19). The passage’s grammar makes reconciliation God’s initiative, while “us” (at least Paul and his co-workers) receive a delegated role to carry and announce what God has done.

Question 2

How does verse 19 explain what reconciliation involves, especially the phrase “not reckoning to them their trespasses”?

Accepted Answer

Verse 19 restates reconciliation in explanatory terms (“namely…”). It describes God reconciling “the world” to himself “in Christ” and then explains one feature of that reconciling: God is “not reckoning” (not counting) trespasses against “them.” In the flow of thought, this non-counting is not presented as people having no wrongdoing; it assumes trespasses exist. The point is that God’s reconciling action changes how those trespasses are treated in the relationship. The verse ties this to the message entrusted to Paul’s team—the announcement includes this non-counting as part of what reconciliation means.

Question 3

What does verse 20 communicate about Paul’s authority and the nature of his appeal to the Corinthians?

Accepted Answer

Verse 20 moves from what God entrusted (vv.18–19) to what Paul’s team is doing with it. Calling themselves “ambassadors on behalf of Christ” frames their speech as representative: they speak for another, not merely for themselves. Paul then intensifies it: it is “as though God were entreating by us,” meaning their appeal is presented as God’s own urging mediated through their voices. The plea “be reconciled to God” shows that reconciliation, while initiated by God, is still something the Corinthians must receive or enter into. The ambassador language also fits the letter’s wider setting where Paul’s credibility has been questioned.

Question 4

How do verses 18–20 relate the “ministry of reconciliation” and the “word of reconciliation”?

Accepted Answer

The passage uses two closely related phrases. The “ministry of reconciliation” (v.18) points to an ongoing entrusted task—Paul’s team has a role to carry out. The “word of reconciliation” (v.19) specifies the content they carry: a proclaimed message about what God has done in Christ, including that trespasses are not counted. Verse 20 then illustrates what that ministry and word look like in practice: representative speech and an urgent appeal. So “ministry” is the entrusted role and responsibility; “word” is the message that defines and drives that role. The paragraph treats both as gifts/entrustments from God, not self-appointed authority.

Question 5

In verse 21, what is said about Christ (“him”) and what is the stated purpose (“so that…”)?

Accepted Answer

Verse 21 makes two claims about Christ. First, Christ “knew no sin,” which asserts his sinlessness. Second, God “made” him “to be sin” on “our behalf,” which describes a God-initiated action involving Christ in relation to human sin, while still keeping Christ personally sinless. The purpose clause then states the intended outcome: “so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” Whatever “righteousness of God” means in full, the verse explicitly locates the result “in him” (in union with Christ) and presents it as the goal of God’s action toward the sinless Christ for “us.”

Question 6

How does the “not counting trespasses” statement (v.19) connect to the “made…to be sin” statement (v.21) within the paragraph’s logic?

Accepted Answer

The paragraph’s logic runs from reconciliation described (vv.18–19), to an appeal to receive it (v.20), to the grounding reason (v.21). Verse 19 says God is reconciling and, as part of that, is not counting trespasses against those being reconciled. Verse 21 then supplies a basis for how this could be coherent: the sinless Christ is acted upon by God “on our behalf” in relation to sin, with the aim that “we” become “the righteousness of God” in him. The text does not spell out every step, but it does connect the non-counting of human trespasses with God’s decisive action involving Christ and a resulting new status/identity “in him.”

Question 7

What does the repeated “in Christ / in him” language contribute to Paul’s meaning in verses 19 and 21?

Accepted Answer

The repeated phrasing ties reconciliation and its outcome to union with Christ rather than to an abstract principle. Verse 19 says God was reconciling the world to himself “in Christ,” linking God’s reconciling work to Christ as the sphere or means through which it happens. Verse 21 then says the intended result is that “in him we might become the righteousness of God,” again placing the outcome within relationship to Christ. This repeated “in” language suggests the change Paul is describing is not merely external reconciliation language; it is bound up with belonging to Christ and sharing in what God accomplishes through him. It also frames Paul’s ambassador appeal as calling people into that Christ-centered reconciliation.
