Question 1

In verse 12, what two outcomes does Paul say this “service” produces?

Accepted Answer

Paul states two results that run in different directions. First, the gift “makes up for lack among the saints,” meaning it addresses a real, practical shortage in the receiving community. Second, it “abounds” in “many givings of thanks to God,” meaning the effect is not only economic relief but also a spread of public gratitude directed upward. Paul frames the offering as both meeting needs and multiplying worship. The second outcome depends on how the recipients interpret the gift: they see God’s hand in it, not merely human philanthropy.

Question 2

Who are “the saints” in this paragraph, and what does the immediate context suggest?

Accepted Answer

Within chapters 8–9, Paul is discussing a coordinated collection associated with believers in Judea, so “the saints” most naturally points to those intended recipients. Verse 12 also speaks of “lack,” which fits the idea of a community experiencing material need. The term “saints” itself can mean God’s people generally, but the surrounding discussion of a particular project suggests a concrete group. Paul’s point does not require every detail of their identity, only that they are fellow believers whose shortage can be supplied through this shared effort.

Question 3

In verse 13, what does Paul mean by “proof” produced through this service? Proof of what?

Accepted Answer

Paul says the recipients will see “proof” through the service, and that proof leads them to glorify God. The passage links the proof to two observations: (1) the Corinthians’ “obedience” matches their “confession” tied to the gospel of Christ, and (2) the Corinthians show “liberality” (openhanded generosity) in their contribution. So the proof is not a receipt or administrative record, but evidence of lived integrity—what the Corinthians claim publicly about Christ is being confirmed by concrete, costly generosity toward others.

Question 4

What reasons does Paul give for the recipients’ glorifying God (v. 13), and how are those reasons connected?

Accepted Answer

Paul gives two related reasons. First, recipients glorify God because the Corinthians’ obedience matches their confession connected with the gospel of Christ—their stated allegiance is validated by action. Second, they glorify God because of the “liberality” of the contribution, both toward the recipients (“to them”) and extending beyond them (“to all”). These reasons are connected because the generous contribution is the visible form of the obedience Paul describes. The recipients’ praise is directed to God because the generosity is read as God’s grace working through the givers.

Question 5

What is the relational response described in verse 14, and what motivates it?

Accepted Answer

Verse 14 describes two relational responses from the recipients back toward the givers. They offer “supplication” on behalf of the Corinthians—prayerful requests for their well-being. They also “yearn” for them, indicating a strong affection and desire for closer connection. Paul grounds this response “by reason of the exceeding grace of God in you.” In other words, the recipients’ warmth is not only gratitude for money received; it is a response to what they perceive as God’s extraordinary generosity and work displayed in the Corinthians’ actions.

Question 6

How do verses 12–14 describe a movement from material help to spiritual and communal outcomes?

Accepted Answer

The sequence begins with material supply: the service fills what is lacking among the saints (v. 12). It then expands into a Godward response: many thanksgivings to God multiply (v. 12). Next, it becomes interpretive and public: the gift functions as “proof” that leads recipients to glorify God for the Corinthians’ obedience and generosity (v. 13). Finally, it becomes relational and ongoing: recipients pray for the givers and feel deep affection, because they recognize God’s surpassing grace at work in them (v. 14).
