Jehoiada gathers commanders, binds them, and reveals the heir Jehoiada initiates the move in the “seventh year,” sending for commanders connected with the Carites and the guard. He brings them into the temple (the “house” of Yahweh) to meet under cover of a sacred and secure setting. There he makes a covenant with them and requires an oath, then shows them the king’s son—sharing the key fact that explains the risk and purpose of the plan.

Historical Context
The passage reflects a time when royal power, temple leadership, and armed guards were closely intertwined in Judah’s capital. A high priest could have real political influence, especially in a crisis, because the temple was both a secure location and a place where oaths and agreements carried weight. The mention of captains “over hundreds” suggests organized military units, and the repeated focus on gates and watches fits a city and palace complex that depended on controlled entry points. The Sabbath references assume a rotating schedule of personnel coming on and off duty weekly.

Some disagreement is about the layout and personnel details rather than the basic storyline. Readers differ on how the gates relate to each other and to the palace/temple complex, and how to picture the “two companies” in v. 7 in relation to the “thirds” in vv. 5–6.
Another difference is about who the “Carites” were (v. 4). Some take them as a specific foreign or mercenary group attached to the royal bodyguard; others understand them as a local guard unit whose name reflects a place or clan.
The text gives named gates (“Gate Sur,” “the gate behind the guard”) without a map, and Kings does not pause to explain the physical connections between palace, temple, and guard posts. Also, the roster terms (“Carites,” “guard,” “captains over hundreds,” “two companies”) can be understood as overlapping groups or as distinct units, and the narrative assumes the reader knows the normal Sabbath duty rotation.
These verses clarify how the restoration of the rightful heir is prepared: through covenant-backed loyalty, controlled timing, and coordinated security. The text explicitly presents Jehoiada as using temple authority (oath and covenant in Yahweh’s house) together with organized force (commanders, watches, gates) to protect the king’s son and manage access during a fragile transfer of power.
