First, what does “look one another in the face” mean? Some read it mainly as an invitation to battle (a formal challenge to fight). Others allow that it could be broader—an aggressive diplomatic demand that could include negotiation but implies confrontation either way.
Second, what is Jehoash doing with the fable? Some take it as mostly wise counsel meant to prevent an unnecessary war. Others think it is counsel wrapped in insult—still a warning, but also a deliberate put-down meant to assert Israel’s superiority and shame Amaziah.
Why the disagreement exists The passage uses indirect, proverb-like speech rather than a direct statement like “I will fight you” or “I refuse.” The key line “look one another in the face” can be used in more than one setting, and Jehoash’s fable can function as both advice and taunt.
