Question 1

How does the narrator describe Naaman’s status and achievements, and how does v.1 undercut that picture?

Accepted Answer

Naaman is introduced with a string of honors: he is the commander of Syria’s army, “great” in his master’s eyes, and respected. He is also presented as effective—his record includes victories attributed to him. The undercutting comes at the end of v.1: despite all this, he has a serious skin disease. The verse is written to force two realities to sit together: public strength and private helplessness. It sets up the main tension—his power can win battles but cannot remove his condition.

Question 2

What does the text say about Yahweh’s involvement in Syria’s victories, and what does it not say?

Accepted Answer

The text explicitly says that Yahweh gave victory to Syria “by” or “through” Naaman (v.1). That is a direct narrative claim about God’s role in political-military events outside Israel. However, the passage does not explain Yahweh’s motive, whether this was discipline on Israel, kindness to Naaman, or part of a larger plan. It also does not comment on Syria’s morality or religion in this moment. The statement functions mainly to widen the story’s scope: Israel’s God is not limited to Israel’s institutions.

Question 3

What role does the captive Israelite girl play in vv.2–4, and how does information travel in the scene?

Accepted Answer

The girl is the origin point of the solution: she tells Naaman’s wife that a prophet in Samaria could help Naaman recover (v.3). Her speech is framed like a wish (“If only…”), yet it carries confidence that real help exists in Israel. Then the content moves upward through the household and into official attention: someone reports “thus and thus” to “his lord” (v.4), leading to the Syrian king’s action (v.5). The chain highlights how a low-status captive becomes the catalyst for international diplomacy.

Question 4

What does the Syrian king’s letter ask for, and why might that be a problem for Israel’s king?

Accepted Answer

The letter’s request is blunt: the Syrian king says he is sending Naaman so that Israel’s king may “recover” or cure him of his disease (v.6). The problem is that it assigns responsibility to the king as if healing is part of royal capability. Israel’s king reacts as though the request is impossible and therefore suspicious (v.7). In the world of kings, an impossible demand can be a pretext for blame and conflict. The letter also bypasses the prophet directly, pushing the matter into political rather than prophetic channels.

Question 5

How do the gifts in v.5 shape the reader’s expectations about how help will be obtained?

Accepted Answer

The large amount of silver and gold and the multiple sets of clothing signal that Naaman expects the problem to be solved through wealth, status, and formal exchange (v.5). In that setting, major favors often come with major gifts, whether as diplomacy, payment, or honor. The gifts also raise narrative tension: if the solution comes from a prophet rather than a court, will money function the same way? At this stage, the gifts mainly show Naaman approaching healing as something that can be secured by the normal tools of power.

Question 6

Why does Israel’s king tear his clothes, and what does his speech reveal about his assumptions?

Accepted Answer

Tearing clothes marks distress and alarm (v.7). The king’s speech shows he assumes two things: first, that healing a serious disease is a divine-level power (“Am I God, to kill and to make alive?”), and second, that the Syrian request is intentionally setting him up to fail. He interprets the message politically: an unsatisfiable demand can be used as a reason to start a quarrel. His response also shows he is not thinking first about the prophet in Samaria; he reads the crisis as king-to-king confrontation.

Question 7

What contrasts does vv.1–7 establish between different kinds of authority and knowledge?

Accepted Answer

The passage contrasts military and royal authority with prophetic knowledge. Naaman and two kings have obvious power: armies, official letters, and large resources. Yet none of those actors actually knows the right pathway to healing. The key insight comes from the captive girl, and the implied solution is located with a prophet in Samaria (vv.3, 7). Another contrast is between confidence and fear: the girl speaks with calm certainty about the prophet’s ability, while Israel’s king panics and assumes hostile intent. The setup points to a coming reversal of expectations about where real help lies.
