Question 1

What problem do the prophetic disciples report to Elisha, and how do they describe their relationship to him?

Accepted Answer

They report that their current living place is “too cramped” for them, suggesting the community has grown or the space is no longer workable. They also describe themselves as dwelling “before” Elisha, which at least indicates an ongoing connection to him as their recognized leader. The phrase can be heard as physical proximity (they live near him) and/or relational oversight (they live under his guidance). Either way, the opening sets Elisha within their daily life, not distant from it, and it frames the need as practical housing capacity rather than a public crisis.

Question 2

What is the plan for expansion, and why is the Jordan a sensible location in the story’s setting?

Accepted Answer

Their proposal is to go to the Jordan, have each person take a beam, and build a new place where they can live. The plan implies shared labor and shared materials: everyone contributes a beam, and together they construct a larger dwelling. Within the story world, the Jordan Valley is a plausible place to cut timber, since trees would be more accessible there than in more sparsely wooded areas. The narrative highlights ordinary logistics—where wood can be found and how it will be gathered—before it introduces the later problem.

Question 3

How does Elisha respond to the group’s requests, and what does his response show about his role among them?

Accepted Answer

Elisha first gives permission: “Go.” Then, when one of them asks him to accompany them, he agrees: “I will go.” The text presents Elisha as both an authority figure (he can approve or deny the plan) and a present participant (he goes with them to the worksite). His going with them matters for the plot because the later crisis happens on location and Elisha addresses it immediately. It also characterizes his leadership as close to the community rather than purely supervisory from a distance.

Question 4

What exactly goes wrong at the river, and what detail does the distressed man emphasize?

Accepted Answer

While one man is cutting a beam, the iron axe-head falls into the water. The man cries out in alarm, focusing on the fact that the axe-head was borrowed. That detail is the story’s own explanation for the intensity of his reaction: the loss is not only inconvenient, it creates an obligation to return what belongs to someone else. The narrative thereby treats borrowed property and the responsibility attached to it as a serious matter, even though the object is “just” a tool.

Question 5

What steps does Elisha take after the axe-head is lost, and how does the text connect those steps to the recovery?

Accepted Answer

Elisha first asks a concrete question: “Where did it fall?” After the man shows the place, Elisha cuts a stick and throws it into the water. The text then says he “made the iron to swim,” and Elisha instructs the man to pick it up. The sequence links Elisha’s question (locating the loss), his action (throwing the stick), and the outcome (the iron rises so it can be retrieved). The passage does not explain the mechanism, but it does portray a clear cause-and-result flow within the narrative.

Question 6

What does the passage explicitly claim happened to the iron, and what does it not explain?

Accepted Answer

Explicitly, it claims that after Elisha throws in a stick, the iron axe-head “swims” or floats, enabling the man to reach out and take it. The text presents this as the decisive resolution of the problem. What it does not do is explain the physics or process of how iron could float, whether the stick interacted with the axe-head, or whether some other means were involved. The narrative interest lies in the effective recovery and Elisha’s role as “man of God,” not in providing a technical description of the event.

Question 7

How do the themes of communal life and material obligation sit alongside the theme of prophetic power in this short story?

Accepted Answer

The story holds these themes together without explicitly ranking them. Communal life appears in the group’s shared housing and shared building plan. Material obligation appears in the borrower’s panic over losing what is not his. Prophetic power appears in Elisha’s authoritative presence and the extraordinary recovery of the axe-head. The plot moves from an everyday need (space) to an everyday accident (lost tool) and then to an unusual resolution (iron floating). That combination suggests the narrative wants readers to see divine help and prophetic authority operating within ordinary economic and communal pressures.
